[ MUSIC ] It's never too late for a financial makeover, and as we reach 2019, more and more Americans seem to have money on the mind. A survey by GoBanking Rates revealed that one in every four Americans are worried about their personal finances for the New Year. Melinnials, in particular, are itching to restructure their financial plans to meet their money goals. According to Principle Financial Services, 94 % of millennials plan on making financial resolutions in 2019, the highest pentage of any generation. But how do you actually revamp your finances? Well first you need to take a hard look at your current financial state.

It's important to track your spending for at least a month, to accurately examine what you're taking in after taxes, as well as what your expenses and spending habits are. Next, a closer look at details of your financial accounts, like the interest rates on your credit cards, the fees on your investment and retirement accounts. And what you're actually investing in, then prioritize saving and re- establishing your credit. Life makes it easy to tap into your saving accounts, but without a cushion for unexpected bills, you can quickly rack up debt. Support your financial security with a goal to save six months' worth of net income in the bank.

And if you haven't made a single contribution to your IRA this year, contributions can still be made until April 15th for the previous year. According to Bankrate, nearly one in four Americans say they have more credit card debt than emergency savings. Effective way to pay off credit card debt is to organize your bills by the highest APR and ensure you are making minimum timely payments on those accounts. Invest in new tools because you can't do it alone. From apps that track your monthly spending habits and [ UNKNOWN ] you extra savings like Trim to Robo Advisors that ensure you're strategically investing every month.

There is plenty of new tools that make it easier for you to stick to your new financial goals. And with the year coming to an close, what would you keep in mind when handling your money in 2019? When the Editor- in- Chief Adam Auriemma shares his advice. Hey Adam thanks so much for having us here at the Breakdown. Let s get right to it, the new year is quickly approaching people are really looking to get a hold of their finances. So what s your top advice for someone who s trying to start fresh? Sure thanks. I think if you re trying to start fresh it s really important to know where your starting from So it sounds very basic, but my top piece of advice is just know your numbers.

How much are you spending and how much are you bringing in? So over the course of a month, track your spending, write it all down, compare it with your after tax income. And those two numbers alone will help you figure out, you know, what are your challenges and opportunities here. And do you have any finantial tips or hacks that you recommend? Sure, I mean, if you're looking for an easy win at the begginning of the new year, I'd definitely take a look at any savings accounts you have. So if you're lucky enough to have a savings account, you may have it at a traditional big bank and you're making a fraction of the percent on interest.

But there are a lot of new online banks, places like Ally, where you can get up to 2 % for a high- yield savings account with no minimum balance. So that's an win for you. Have your money make more money for you. Mm- hm, okay. So you've been editor in chief for Money Magazine for two years now. That's an amazing accomplishment. So how has your work impacted your financial outlook? You know I think it just made me realize how important it is that you really take control of your finances. So no one's gonna do it for you. That there are a lot of tools and resources out there that can help you. And you really need to craft a plan that works for you.

Maybe you're more traditional conservative investor. Maybe you wanna just invest in the stock market a little by little over a long course. Or maybe you're more entrepreneurial and you wanna figure out how to start a business or take advantage of this new digital economy. Whatever works for you, you have to make your own plan that fits your style. All right, very insightful as always, thnak you so much for joining us. Of course, thank you.
