## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Setting a budget is often viewed as a negative thing and even budget sort of has a negative connotation. So how do you get someone to just start? I have this analogy, the white fence budget analogy which I tend to talk about in my book. And it talks about how, Budgeting is kind of like a safety net around your money. So, a lot of times people think budgeting is scary or they can't do it or they can't stick with it. But I think of it as a budget as a fence around your money. You can still have fun with your money as long as you stay within the budget. Okay. So then how do you, you get started because I think a lot of people think that If they set a budget, it's going to keep them from doing the things that they like to do.

Right, so the first thing I do is sit down, the last part of every month, and I plan the whole month out ahead of time, and then tell your money where it's going. Look at all your bills, look at all your necessary bills first. Then whatever you have that's not necessary, when you run out of money you run out of money, but give yourself some play room, some play cash every single month. Whether that be $ 5 whatever you can afford. Or $ 50 or $ 100. But give yourself a little bit of play money so you don't feel that constraint that a lot of people do with a budget. But if you're making a budget for the first time how do you know how much money to allocate to different things?

What I do is I tell people to go and look back at their past three months of spending. And then get an average. And then when you make your first budget, that is the number that you're going to use when you make your first budget. And your goal for that first month is not to save any money, it's just to stick to the numbers. And then, once you've been able to stick to the budget, those numbers, if you were spending $ 350 on groceries Keep it at 350 and then the next month you can start to bring that number down a little bit [ MUSIC ]
