## Transcript

ADHD could lead to obesity, but smoking marijuana could help you to slim down. Here's this week's health news. Researchers studying ADHD were following a group of boys for 33 years when they stumbled upon an interesting finding. They wanted to scan the brains of the boys to see if there are any differences among those who develop the disorder. As the boys got older some of them are having a hard time fitting into the brain scanning machines. So the researchers started taking measurements of their height and weight. They found that boys with ADHD were twice as likely to be obese as adults. [ MUSIC ].

Anywhere from 10 % to 18 % of women who give birth develop postpartum depression, but at this point there's no way to tell which women are going to be more vulnerable to the condition. Now researchers say two genes have been connected to postpartum depression. Even better, they can track the activity of those genes with a blood test. And the researchers hope that that blood test will become a good way of predicting which women are at highest risk of developing postpartum depression at any time during their pregnancy. [ MUSIC ]. Smoking marijuana is generally associated with the munchies, but the latest research shows that smoking can actually lower obesity rates and lower the risk of diabetes.

Marijuana's main ingredient, a cannabinoid, binds to receptors in the brain that activate appetite. Continued smoking and activation of these receptors can dull their response. [ MUSIC ] Researchers found that elderly people who ate a Mediterranean diet high in olive oil and nuts scored better on cognitive tests, on things like memory, organization, and planning, than those who ate a low- fat diet. They believe that things like antioxidants and anti- inflammatories are responsible for the brain- boosting effects.
