Here's what you need to know about the Ukrainian opposition leader and what his growing popularity means for the future of Ukraine. On November 21st the president of Ukraine, Victor Yanukovych, did not sign historic integration deal with the EU, choosing instead to align his country closer to Russia. His decision shocked a large pro- Western sector of Ukraine. Pro- Western demonstrations flooded the streets of Kiev, Ukraine's capital. And with protesters barricading the streets, taking over city hall and demanding for the government ouster. In the boxing ring, Klitschko, a three- time heavyweight title holder has a 45 to 2 record with 41 KOs, but the champion has not fought since September 2012, instead he has been on the forefront of the protests in Kiev. He is now the leader of the opposition party, UDAR, which means punch in Ukrainian, a fitting reference to his past in the ring. Last year, UDAR won 42 seats in parliament making him a major force in the opposition. Known in the boxing world as Dr. Iron Fist, Klitschko is not new to politics, since 2005 he has twice ran for mayor of Kiev. Once hiring former New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, to advice his campaign. Both of those races ended in defeat. But the ongoing standoff in Kiev has now turned him into a political heavyweight. While leading a protest he has met with senior diplomat from Europe and the US including Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland who have come to show the support for the protest. At this point the demonstrations seem to be stuck in a [ unk ] as thousands of protesters continue to face down [ unk ] in the streets, but the protesters have already managed to make Ukraine's president reconsider his position on the integration deal with the EU. If Ukraine signs a deal with the EU, the Eastern European country would take another step out of Russia's fear of influence. As for Dr. Iron Fist, the next presidential elections in Ukraine are set for February of 2015 and he has already thrown his hat in the ring.
