## Transcript

Home Depot confirms what everyone feared. It's data breach, only just discovered in early September, affected 56 million credit cards. In a statement released Thursday, the company said the malware used to hack it's systems in the U. S. and Canada, had been removed. Though the company did not specify when that process wrapped up. CEO Frank Blake wrote, we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and anxiety this has caused, and want to reassure them tha they will not be liable for fraudulent charges. But Bloomberg senior market correspondent points out this malware. Presents a unique set of problems because it appears the hackers somehow uploaded it at an actual Home Depot store terminal.

The problem is even if you switch to new technology it's not. Clear if it would prevent exactly that type of an attack. The new numbers, of course, made this an even larger breach than the 40 million credit cards compromised last holiday season at Target stores. But interestingly, Home Depot says its third quarter sales are still aligned with projections. Instead of falling off drastically, like Target. Perhaps a nod to the fact the big- box home improvement store only has so many competitors. If you've recently shopped at Home Depot, consumer advocates widely recommend keeping an eye on credit card activity, once a day.

And contact your credit card company immediately if you see something strange. Home Depot says it will offer anyone who shopped there since April free identity theft protection services. But remember, the fair credit billing act says your liability for unauthorized credit card use tops out at fifty bucks.
