## Transcript

Three Al Jazeera journalists now sit in prison, convicted by an Egyptian court in a trial widely viewed as a huge hit to press rights in the country. Arrested in December, Peter Greste, Muhamed Fahmy, and Baher Mohamed listened to the verdict against them Monday morning. Human rights groups say the case shows authorities are trampling on freedom of expression. But Egyptian officials, refute the claims. They say the journalists raised suspicion by operating with out proper accreditation. Telegraph reporter Luisa Lovelock, captured the uproar, soon after the verdict was read, posting to her Instagram account, Fahmy shouted, they will pay for this, I promise, they will pay for this.

The journalists and Al Jazeera both deny the charges against the journalists. Greste and Fahmy face seven years in prison, with Mohammed receiving ten years, for charges of spreading false news and conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood. The convictions brought on international outrage. Al Jazeera posted the video of British journalists from different media outlets, all wearing black tape over their mouth and holding signs reading journalism is not a crime. The New York Times sent out the same message as the newspaper left it's back page blank in protest of the sentencing. The Times also noted there was no publicly available evidence that the journalists had either supported the Brotherhood or broadcast anything inaccurate.

BBC reports this is part of a long running feud between Egypt and Qatar, which finances Al- Jazeera. Al- Jazeera journalists are viewed in Egypt as supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. This is what the accusations were about. Supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and spreading lies, that, with, with, the aim of tarnishing the reputation of the state of Egypt. This is a potentially huge embarrassment for the Obama administration. As it comes just a day after Secretary of State John Kerry met with Egypt officials in Cairo on his way to Baghdad. The British foreign minister and a AFP reporter based in the Netherlands both said of Twitter.

The Egyptian ambassadors in those respective countries had been summoned to talk about the sentencing. The new Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah el- Sisi has the power to pardon the journalists. Thanks for watching. I'm Megan Judy.
