Delawari my parents named me Ariana after the ancient name of Afghanistan. My last name is courageous. My love for Afghanistan lies in the deepest part of my heart. When I started traveling to Afghanistan, I was just documenting my trips. I had no idea I was making the film. People always ask why it was so important for me to go there. And why I care so much about this country My mother's father came to the United States when he was 19 years old, his father, my great-grandfather came home. One day with a trunk of goods and a coin rolled out. My grandfather, picked it up. It was a US penny. He thought that Abraham Lincoln was a holy man. He was so moved by the face of Abraham Lincoln. And by the words in God, we trust that he said I must go there. One day, he stowed away in the rafters of a ship in Karachi with his best friend. All he had was a bunch of bananas and a loaf of bread. He snuck into the country and he met my Sicilian grandmother, Pauline restivo? It was practically unheard of for an Afghan Muslim man to marry a sicilian Catholic woman, but my grandfather was a charmer and my grandmother was a rebel, a raised 12 children in New Jersey. My mother was the sex And I can remember my father talking to me about the old country, he was always talking about the old country and I didn't know which country it was. I just had this longing to go to this old country. And that my mother was in the house making oatmeal. And I was sitting on the step looking, of course, that Logan called Bay. Thinking that was the ocean someday, I'm going to go. Other side of the world. That was the other side of the world. She finally went there, when she was 22 years old. That's how she met my dad. They raised us in Los Angeles. Years ago, two of these girls were dodging Russian bombs and bullets in the homeland of Afghanistan, but it looks to me as though, but Donna has helped them to adopted a new country and to adapt very well. The year that the Soviets invaded Afghanistan Massive Soviet military forces have invaded the small not aligned Sovereign Nation of Afghanistan. The people of Afghanistan are leaving their country. And there was a selfish reason, cuz I have to pacify my mind and I'm doing something useful, I'm doing something that the best I could do out of the United States, was fighting so hard to freeze people. I didn't think anyone was listening. I thought he was wasting his time and I wasn't that much older but I was old enough to really understand. We saw firsthand what are cousins. Had lived through many of her little kids, they were dodging bombs. There's a little boy who came to our house and I remember him playing with Ariana, he was about Ariana's age and he had lost his hand because he had picked up one of these line. Their remaining, what would be future soldiers? During the ten years of Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. I organize every one of the demonstrations took place in Los Angeles, some very hard feeling, which I experienced in. Los Angeles demonstration, in front of the federal building, we had about six. Seven hundred people asking and trying to stop Soviet genocide in Afghanistan. Do you know? There was not one single American News, man, in that place we had in for every one of the channels television channels and news media in Los Angeles. No one came with ignore what's going on in Afghanistan. When the Soviets finally withdrew from Afghanistan a civil war broke out in the country and the Taliban a fundamentalist regime took over All art, they band music. Women had to be covered from head, to toe little girls were told that they could no longer go to school. It's a very, very different Afghanistan from what my father, and his brothers and sisters grew up with my aunt's grew up in miniskirts and beehives and it was a modern time in Afghanistan that they grew up in. At what we see today, it's all rooted back to the Taliban and how the Taliban came. It was Bin Laden. He was a conduit bringing money from the Soviets to set up Calvin. Schools in Pakistan is called mattresses and these thousands of dollars and then when the Soviet Union, withdrew and United States lost interest in Afghanistan Bin Laden, God, Found the country and his disposal, the Train, San Andreas and thousands of times the American terrorists. I don't know why you didn't see what will happen. September 11th, changed our lives forever. My mom happened to be visiting my sister in New York. We went up to my roof. If you looked out on all the rooftops, you could see everybody was on the ribs. And at this point after the second plane hit everyone realize this was not a mistake. So we were all still trying to wrap our minds around what was happening and I remember my neighbors saying who could have done this and my mom. I'm trying to she said, as long as I wanted, he's been training terrorists in Afghanistan for years. Newark wrote a paper folding. Osama Bin Laden born in July of 2001, July of 2001, two months before September 11th have took it to Congress and none of the missing since 81 nobody After 9/11 them two pages from CIA in an anti-terrorist unit of the state department that came to me from where you got this information. I was reading a newspaper, clipping. These clippings I've kept because I wasn't following. I'm not paid like you. You should have followed this. You should have prevented this. The second, the Taliban fell. I knew my dad would go to Afghanistan and in February of 2002. He got on a plane and moved there to help rebuild the country. One of the first things, my dad had to do when he got to Afghanistan, was helped, create modern banking laws, without these laws. There could be no Banks without banks. There was no way for foreign governments or individuals to wire money into the country and begin the reconstruction. I'm finishing up packing, girl. Where are you going going to Afghanistan? My parents sold their business, their home and everything. They owned. This Thursday is sold on Saturday, when escrow closed a lot of my new furniture and stuff. I sold to the new owners of the house and the rest of it. You put a sign moving to Afghanistan everything free. I made my first trip to Afghanistan in October of 2002. I never thought I'd get to go there. I looked down at the mountains and I knew my life was about to change. It was a magical time a moment in history. I truly believed that Afghanistan would finally be free. New back for the old Afghan equivalent to just one US dollar replaced by 50, new Afghani, where's the same amount taking place under the watchful. I asked my friend Max and Paloma, if they would come to Afghanistan and within a few months, we were ready to leave. Okay? Something new is happening. Then she calls now. The trip came out the same way. I think I can't remember, but I think it was Alexis like, left, Kelly's like instruments. They have in record this album and then I had some other point was like we just go there. I'm going to get to play with people who are going to these amazing. Musicians, number one, number two coming from a culture playing entrance. I don't get to play with our use and you know, one of the guys, you know, he was an old man with the last, the last of his kind. You know, after I stop I'm going to go over there and absorb everything I can do their instruments. We destroyed or they'd be killed. These men were Elders. Have seen the whole thing. They saw Afghanistan before when it was free and I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know. But I'm excited to find out. We don't have the dates yet but it'll be approximately three weeks, maybe less in June. And the US and Max but I will say that there's definitely like a risk. It's not like, you know, it's not totally safe that's why I just wanted to sit down and talk with you. That it seems like stuff is really escalated there since I could fall. It has definitely changed in 2002. For me, it's like I want to go make this album now because you still camp in a year. I don't know, right? I knew that if the Taliban regained control music would be banned and those sounds could be lost forever. So I want you to just tell me about how your family is feeling about this. They feel for me that this trip came about suddenly and that maybe I'm making a rash decision about it. It was about an American girl, and she leaves her husband. She goes well, with the cream cheese and I read about the pictures and I was fascinated. Who are these people like while I couldn't wait to go there. My friend. Ainger in artist so we decided we wouldn't go see the pooches. I said we need to have something extra special because I have a friend, always really good to ask in front of me. So I don't want to be with any Western Afghans, fries. I don't like being around them and stole this from, he's really special. So, I went to her house or the morning and then she was making Kahlua. And when she saw me, She didn't like the way I was dressed because of a small Western. She was expecting to see an Afghan coming from the coochie camp or somewhere that young guy. You know, 23 or so in any distress in western clothes and he had sunglasses on and he had an ascot scarf and I looked at him and I said to him, I just want you to know, I cannot stand western African and it was my reading tip. Pacific blue cheese, can you stop sneezing a whole bunch of baby camels. And I just went. And then all the sudden. I see this coming down the mountain, he is, literally his eyes are gold. He was so handsome. I looked at him and I said, to know her, Who is now know what is it? My question. How do you think that man is handsome? He was. Because if you're trying to ask me to marry you I mean then you should just ask me cuz someday if my grandchildren asked me about this I want to be able to tell the story. Then we flew to California, then we let me know what our first child. So I was born in January 1971, two years after And then yes mean was born September 27th 1972. Couple weeks ago, there was a suicide bombing in an attack, on the Cobblestone Hotel. I stayed at that hotel. My parents were living there for a while. Like it was really close to home and my mom's good friend from work with kill. My mom was really crashed and it was just very close to how my dad was across the street at the bank and it happened. So he kind of just Maybe realize again. Why why I'm doing this and why I have to do this? This is what I would be reporting momentarily. Yeah. David Lynch had come to my very first show as I was finishing the album. He said he wanted to produce the song, mix the whole record and put it out on his new label. It was very nice to work with Ariana and see a song, Get get born and, and grow and take shape. And then in in finishing the album we all hear everything on the big speakers. I went back to see my parents. What's playing at sometimes you think you never know when you going to call it, the good old days, maybe someday, we'll call this a good old days but it's so different now. It's not the same. Like for me to 4 Catherine Street, in Norman say, I used to go to just get out and walk around and take a photograph or video without a got with just a driver. I can't even get a lot of things have changed since. when we were in the car, My woman with a chowder. You like the burger. I came up to the window and I'd like to get the camera out the window and he rolled it up and I pulled the camera and and then the driver were both. Like, you don't understand, we have a bomb under her occasional incident You must have found a very difficult coming back here. And I imagine that your experience right now is really intense when I go to an orphanage or a refugee camp, and I meet with kids and they look at me with so much hoping they remember my name. And I feel like all of those kids that I photographed, her, I connected with, I made a promise to you, whether I said it or not, I come back like and I either, there's corruption bureaucracy. You know, people who are in positions of power, abusing the power and it's been 7 years, not a cop The album came out on October 13th 2009. There was a lot of press and critical praise but deep down I felt awful Afghanistan was still a mess and it was getting worse. I kept thinking about all the people I met there and how their lives would change if the Taliban regain control of the country. From the time that I came here in 2002 and now its 2009 Afghanistan has changed and the atmosphere. And the security is not like it was before. Now, at the point, I am in my life, I have one of my three children, but I have three grandchildren, I miss so much of their life and then I think she know I got to spend more time back there and so I do think sometimes I'm going back, but I know I'll always be living in the two half and one country have from the other. So I'll always be in both countries. My mom moved back. Shortly after my last visit to Afghanistan, she bought a house in Los Angeles. My father stayed in Afghanistan, his post, as governor of the central bank had ended in 2007, when he fell three votes, shy of confirmation. By the parliament, he went back to running. I sat and became a minister advisor to president Karzai on banking in the private sector. Is it hard to be away from Dad? Sometimes. Yes, but I have to do what I have to do and he has to do what he has to do. And he's bombarded with work. My dad came home for a quick visit. He was under a lot of stress Afghanistan's entire economy was hinging on collapse. After the discovery that couple Bank. The country's largest private bank had made hundreds of millions of dollars in fraudulent loans to some powerful and corrupt Afghans. There were suspicions that the acting governor of the Central Bank was in on it word quickly. Spread that my dad would be asked to replace him when I turn it on, This morning, I woke up and I heard you and Mom talking about how he might become the governor of the central bank. Again Well that's something has been talked about because the vacuum system, which I made a lot of contributions toward reform of the Central Bank been lately. We more suffering president is very much concerned about these meetings with it. I would like to see that the system, which we all work so hard in the human stuff that's kind of standard reconstruction to, you know, to Safford Road. As I see, it is happening today in months after my dad returned to Afghanistan. We woke up one morning to an alarming email from him. Today is March 2011 and we just got the email. From my husband from Lord, that the people from the Attorney General's office, showed up at his office and took him to detention center, and they kept in there for 4 hours, questioning him about a contract that was, that was signed back in 2003 at that time. Nor was on the commission that handles Ariana airlines that a contract to pay Lufthansa airlines to be a consultant and work with them to update Ariana. And now, it doesn't make any sense to me. Eight years later that they bring them into the office and arrest him when he was just on the commission and this was the money. Clearly went to left on the airline's. I didn't go to any one else. This was a legitimate idea that the president had and so now years later they're questioning this judgment that was made and they arrested him for it and question. For 4 hours. I mean, it makes the country's Ludacris Ludacris as we started to read more more stories. I was very concerned for my father because I became very clear to me that somebody was targeting him that he was standing in the way of someone who could profit if he was out of the way. Within days, I woke up to an LA Times blog. Connecting my music to the corruption charges against my dad. It's just so frustrating that I cannot say anything and that my dad is falsely accused. Literally my Dad's life is in danger and so I had to be really delicate about how I reacted Somebody is going to. We won't be able to get it out. And I was thinking we should try to see. Yeah, good for. This corruption is so horrible and it's everybody practically. Well, right now, I went and bought some phone calls cuz I'm going to call him up and talk to him on the phone. March 30th, 2011, Ariana, John, thanks for your comforting words. I do feel very stressful but nothing will affect my faith in God. The day before yesterday, right after I was released from some kind of detention. I was asked to meet with the president. The event had caused me so much hurt and disbelief, when I was greeted with the usual Embrace, I could not hold my emotion. I told the president that as a member of your government, they have destroyed my reputation. I hope you will Rectify it at the present time. I feel depressed and confused all these past years. Since I've come back here, I considered my presents a privilege. Now, I am so angry. I almost hate this place. Love you, Dad. I wouldn't tell my sisters and my mom this because I know that how they feel about things, but like I don't. Honestly, I don't really want my dad to leave. I know they want my dad to come home and I know it's safe for him to come home. but, if he leaves stay away, and if he leaves, Then he doesn't continue his work. I mean if it's about as hell yeah that's one thing. But I know my dad and I don't think he feels like he's finished his work there and If the, if they chased out the honest people, by trying to call them thieves, or trying to have bad press about them, so that it scares them away.
