These were two extremely powerful blasts. The aim clearly to kill as many people as possible in the crowded market, an indiscriminate attack which killed Christians and Muslims. Channels Television based in Lagos reports the first bomb went off between a train station and a hospital before a second blast hit 15 minutes later, after people had swarmed in to help. While the initial death toll was at, at least 118, that number is expected to rise. Fire gutted some of the stalls at the market. And police are saying they will have to go into them to see whether there are still anybody under the rubble. No organizations have claimed responsibility for the attacks but officials say they bear all the signs of the Islamist group, Boko Haram. The group's name means " western education is forbidden ". It has taken credit for a wave of recent violence including car bombs in the capital and kidnapping more than 200 school girls in mid April. Jos is the capital of a state that splits the mostly christian south of Nigeria from a mostly Muslim north. When Boko Haram attacked churches in the city two years ago, many saw it as an attempt to spark clashes between members of the two religions. The latest attacks only seem to stoke fear among Nigerians, that their government has little to no ability to stop the group. Leaders are now seeing unyielding criticism, for their inability to find and return the teenage schoolgirls, five weeks after their mass kidnapping.
