>> It's makeover time for nutrition labels and the idea is making better food choices could be getting a little easier. Here is a hypothetical side- by- side of the old and new from the Food and Drug Administration. Calories and servings per container are now much more in your face. Another proposed change addressing serving sizes that aren't easy to calculate like nutrition facts for 8 ounces of soda on a 20- ounce bottle. Who stops at just 8 ounces? The new labels would also show how much added sugar a food has. They'd rid of calories from fat info. And sodium, fiber, and vitamin D are among nutrients whose daily values will get updates.

This would be the first time in more than 20 years for nutrition labels to get an overhaul. The change is being widely attributed to First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move Initiative combating childhood obesity. In a press release, she called the proposals a big deal and said, " You, as a parent and a consumer, should be able to walk into your local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it's good for you family ." According to the FDA, the label changes could cost the food industry some $ 2 billion. There will be a 90- day public comment period; after which, it will be up to the FDA to come up with a final ruling.
