[ MUSIC ] We all make really dumb money moves sometimes. But the question is, can you learn anything from it? With me to help us extract lessons from some of our biggest mistakes is Jill Schlesinger, our financial expert. Jill, thank you for being here. This is one of my favorite things, to talk about our blunders and learn something from it. Okay, so let's look at some of these mistakes that people admitted to, and we will talk through them. I didn't have much of an emergency fund and I got laid off. So I racked up $ 7, 000 in debt. Bad things can happen to you And when bad things can happen to you, you take on the least amount of risk possible.

Bad things can be anything from losing your job, it could be a health care emergency, it could be someone in your family that needs help. Generally speaking six to twelve, 12 months of your expenses socked away in a really boring place even if it does pay rotten interest. Let's see if you can actually find a mistake. This is good. I didn't start saving for retirement until 30, and I knew about compound interested. Well, this is a mistake. This is a mistake, and here's why. The earlier you start saving, the better it's going to be, and I had talked to so many twentysomethings to come out of college, and they said, well, I have a student loan debt, I can't possibly contribute to retirement, as my grandfather used to say poppycock, because the reason is You have some money, and you may even have an employer who provides a match.

So at the very least, even if you have student loan debt, put at least as much up to the match in your retirement plan to kick yourself in the **** and get Started. So don't wait till 30 and certainly don't wait till 40 or 50. Every day this summer, I bought an iced coffee for about $ 3. 50. I think brilliant. [ LAUGH ] Okay, here's why. This is not a mistake at all, because I was just listening to a pod cast with a Harvard physician Who actually said there are great benefits in coffee. And I like danced a jig when I heard that. I am not of the type of financial advisors or CFPs who would stop drinking coffee because you're a [ UNKNOWN ].

I think that The bigger mistake might be, for example, every day this summer I went out for a $ 100 dinner. That would be a pretty big mistake. Yes. For $ 3. 50, if it gave you some joy, and maybe you found a way to do something different, or you didn't go to lunch out, okay fine. Cut yourself some slack. Great advice, Jill. Thank you very much. If you have a money mistake and you would like to be able to find some lessons from it, please send it to us at the address below. Thank you. Thank you, Jill Schlesinger. Great to be with you.
