## Transcript

>> Former Bolshoi ballet star dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko was sentenced to six years in prison after a Moscow Court found him and two other men guilty of carrying out a gruesome acid attack on the ballet's artistic director. The real- life drama played out within Russia's most popular ballet in a country that reveres dancers much the way Americans often seem to worship professional athletes. A judge ordered Dmitrichenko to serve six years behind bars for being the mastermind behind the attack that severely burned and nearly blinded Sergei Filin last January. The dancer's accomplice, Yuri Zarutsky, will spend 10 years in jail and the driver involved in the attack was sentenced to four years.

Police say Filin was walking to his apartment in Moscow in January 17th when Zarutsky threw sulfuric acid in his face. Investigators said in the court that three men had plans to harm Filin for months before the attack took place. It was all because of a conflict between the artistic director and Dmitrichenko. According to prosecutors, Dmitrichenko asked Zarutsky to beat Filin up because he had denied both him and his girlfriend key roles in the ballet shows, but Dmitrichenko testified he had no idea his accomplice would use acid in the attack and then he was shocked when he heard about it in the news.

The former Bolshoi star also said he tried to convince Zarutsky they should turn themselves in, but claims Zarutsky threatened to harm his girlfriend if he went to police. Since the attack, Bolshoi has fired or refused to [ unk ] contracts with multiple employees trying to distance themselves from allegations of bitter internal rivalries and favoritism in handing out roles. Built in 1776, Bolshoi Theater sits just off the Red Square and the Kremlin. While ballet's popularity faded in the U. S. and Western Europe over the last half century, it remains incredibly strong in Russia where government leaders have heavily subsidized it for centuries.

A writer for Slate explains its equal parts history, national pride, and hero worship. Filin has been in Germany since the attack where doctors have been working to repair his sight. He has reportedly undergone at least 20 surgeries. Lawyers for the three men say they will appeal. For TIME, I'm Jamal Andrews.
