I'm here this evening at School of Life to give a reading or a master class as this has been called, and tonight I shall be reading How to Wallpaper a Room in the voice of Ernest Hemingway. Because of health and safety, unfortunately, prevents me from reading as a wallpaper. Hemingway on wallpaper, do make good bedfellows. Hemingway makes a good bed fellow for any kind of manly activity I suppose. So, the whole world of DIY would probably, you know, work quite well with Hemingway style. The Old Man and the Sea is a classic, I suppose about man and the dignity of work in difficult circumstances, which we've all experienced, [ unk ] wallpapering. Well, for the TIME. com viewers who can't be here tonight, I'd say the three probably most important tips would be, be patient, work slowly and buy yourself a good pasting table. >> I'm Sophie Howard, I'm director of the School of Life here in London and we're in the basement of the school which is the kind of wonder world epicenter of everything that goes on. The room as you can see is a [ unk ] and we found every detail, every book that was gonna be on the wall, every piece of music, it was gonna be Brazil versus [ unk ] from a tele Google on the laptop. Here we've got Lorenzetti's Allegory of Good Government. What we wanted was to fill the room with all the references that we alluded to in our courses and to create a kind of a-- a witty but also intellectually stimulating environment for discussion and teaching. They start with the [ unk ] coming in off the street and you can enter a wholly other world. You come in to a forest of trees and inside you find books and ideas and holidays so then you can come down stairs into this extraordinary space below. So we're minutes away from the first of our DIY classes. What really appealed to me about Mark's work is [ unk ] fine with you, I'm just gonna make you amends, perhaps one of this school of life you should attend to is the importance of DIY at the moment when we're all tightening our purses a bit. >> Thank you so much for coming along. I've just been looking through the bookshelves over there, slightly alarmed earlier to look at Jonathan Franzen's How to be Alone. Not really the thought you would put in your mind for a reading. The old man had worked for two days and two nights to strip away the old wallpaper. Now on the morning of the third day, the time to hang the new paper had come. I am an old man, he thought. But I have many tricks and I have resolution. Then he placed the edge of the paper against the line he had drawn on the wall. The paper slid into place and the old man took the wallpaper brush from his pocket. The old man felt good now. He no longer thought of the pain in his hands and in his back. He no longer thought of the treachery of the ceiling. For it was not the ceiling's fault. Wall! I respect you very much. But I will paper you before this day is over. Thank you. Thank you. I meant to have live events like this, I think it's a wonderful thing.
