It's links golf and it's designed in sustainable fashion. My name is Brent Zepp and I am the first assistant golf professional here at Chambers Bay. This was a gravel mine. They literally mine gravel out of here for 110 years digging this gigantic hole that now sits as a golf course. So what makes this property and this golf course sustainable, number 1 is the water. We use very little of it and all of it is reclaimed water. Also the native environment here. Much of this property is not maintained. You'll even find rocks in here around the rock quarry days. You know it's just part of the design and then this is all that red fescue, fine red fescue is what they call it. You can see some of the red blades of grass, but this native grass is just really nature is taking care of it. It's growing daily. I mean turn around right here and you can see how thick this grass can get. This is what some of the players have to deal with. You can imagine your golf ball getting in here and trying to hit a shot out of this. It's all about survival. Everything you're looking at is fescue grass, from the rough to the fairways, tee boxes, green, but what's great about the marriage here was sustainability and just all of these plants coexisting is that we're links golf and links golf is very raw. This golf course is a tribute to the original game that was played 500 years ago in Scotland where the land next to the water is very barren, you know, the high dunes and just very hard rocky, where the sheep would graze and that's where the game was developed. On links golf it's all about using your imagination. The golf ball hits the ground and it's not done. It rolls, gravity takes it to where its final resting place would be, and so that changes the whole game. >> It's a lot different than most of the courses I play which have lot of, you know, the pines, the big trees and stuff. It's a lot more open and the ball rolls so quickly and the sand is super hard to get in and out of. It makes a real challenging course. >> Yes. >> There's lots of bumps, lots of curves and you play those accordingly and that's the fun of this course. So you need to really look at the distance, really look at the lie and where everything sits. There's a lot of movement. There's a lot of hills. There's a lot of-- this is a crazy course. >> Well, I like variety so that's what I like about this course is it is different. People in the northwest are definitely gonna have to get used to it because there's not a lot of these courses around. So it'll take a little bit of getting used to, but I think it will catch on. >> I love seaside links courses, anyway, coming from England but this is about the best I've ever played. >> We're very excited to host the US Amateur. The golf course is gonna be great for the players. I think for them it's very unique, you know. A majority of the US Amateur championship is match play, and this golf course is perfect for match play. The 2015 US Open is gonna be here as well and that will be an amazing event. You know with 50, 60, 000 people walking around here watching the best players in the world, you know, duke it out for the US Open, and this golf course is deserving of that.
