It seems like, in the blink of an eye, they're already off to school. Deciding where to send your children to school and how to pay for it can be one of the most stressful and expensive decisions a parent makes. That's why, more and more, I hear from couples like Stewart and Jim who are at a loss about what to do about their childs education. My name is Jim and this is my wife, Stuart and we live in Bayside Queens, New York. Our son is just about to turn four years old and his name is Adrick. We're constantly worried about are we doing enough for him? What is his future gonna look like? Can we help him with that? We are not a double income family. We are not making as much as a lot of people are. And we live in a very expensive part of the world. True. So we have to get very creative with our budgets and how we choose to do things. We want him to be creative, and a thinker, and a problem solver. And to do that, unfortunately, you kind of sometimes have to get out of the mainstream education field And to do that takes money. Next year he's going to kindergarten and we are just overwhelmed by the options. We're overwhelmed by the cost of some of those options. So we're really just pretty terrified about are we going to be able to do that. Are we gonna be able to make those kind of decisions for him if it's necessary for him? Jeff, we really need your help to make sure that we make the right decisions right now for Adrick and his education. Without ruining our financial future. Stuart and Jim are not alone. The choices that parents face about their child's education As early as kindergarten can be expensive and tricky. Here are some things to consider. Start early. I cannot emphasize this enough. College costs continue to rise every year, and planning now will save you stress down the line. The money you set aside for your children when they're young is particularly valuable, since it has the ability to compound over time. You can put some of it into the stock market. If the market goes down in a short term, you'll be able to recover those losses before your children are even thinking about SATs or scheduling college visits. Open a 529 savings plan which grows tax defer and can be withdrawn tax free if used towards education related expenses. Make deductions automatic and ask your friends and family to contribute and lure a birthday gift. For earlier education consider religious school which can be cheaper than private schools. Or you can supplement a public school education with innovative after school program of private children. I'm going to meet with Stewart and Jen, review their goals, offer some possibilities, and come up with some solutions to get them to their desired destination.
