We're here with five- time Grammy Award- winning recording artist, Dr. John. The new album by Dr. John and the Lower 911 is called Tribal, came out August 3rd. Thank you so much for joining us. Our reader named Denis Murrell, who's writing from China, wants to know, " How would you describe your own music? >> Well, I like to think of what Louis Armstrong and also Duke Ellington said about music. There's only two kinds of music, good and bad. And I would like to think of my music as being good. My late song- writing partner and myself, Bobby Charles who just passed away, have consistently been writing songs about truth nobody wants to hear about. It's the most important thing to me. >> How have the spirits and the ancestors of New Orleans music influenced you? >> From Jelly Roll Morton to the people like Buddy Bolden that invented jazz, on and on, all of our musical character and all of other things that we gave to the world, we freely gave it all. And Louis Armstrong was the only ambassador of the United States to the world and I'm very proud to say, I grew up in his neighborhood and I feel very blessed, that my father used to say, " That's where Louis Armstrong was born ." He never called him Louie. He never called him Satchmo. Louis Armstrong was born. >> We've talked a couple of times about spirits and spirituality and you've got your walking stick and what you're wearing around your neck. Can you tell us a little bit about what that is? And then, why it's important to you? >> I believe very strongly that the only thing wrong with any religion is man. There's nothing wrong with any religion but man. And I believe very strongly that there's one spirit that guides us all. We call it the Great Spirit. You can call it-- You're holy, you can call him a myriad of names, Allah. You can-- The name doesn't matter. It's still one spirit up there. But there's a myriad of other spirits around that spirit. Every religion has a way of breaking something down in another way and I'm not against any of them. >> Ed Schaben in Seattle wants to know, " Do you still play guitar? And when did you switch to keyboards ?" >> Well, Ronnie Barron who was the vocalist with my band, I walked in, I had taken him, he was juvenile. He was on the road singing with our band, and this guy was pistol- whipping and his mother said if anything happened to him on the road, she was gonna take this meat cleaver that she was cutting meat with and cut my cojones off. Now, I was thinking about her. I loved her. She was a sweet woman, but I knew she cared about her son, so I went and tried to get the gun out of the guy's hand. I got shot in my finger. It was sewed back on, but it kind of messed part of my head up about, " Oh, I can't play the guitar ." I still play it a little bit, but I can't play the way I did when I play with this finger now. I made mistakes because it was so [ unk ]. There's no feeling. >> Well, let's talk about New Orleans. >> Yes. >> We have a question from Christopher Gustin from Arabi, Louisiana. >> Uh- huh. >> And Christopher writes, " I feel like things still aren't quite right around New Orleans. I think it's just hard to forget what happened and ease back into that old swing of things. Do you agree and do you think it will ever be the same? >> Well, there's-- considering that over half the population is not back and have no way to come back to, I don't see how it could ever be anyway connected to what we came up with. In the Lower Ninth Ward, this is like scattered and splattered and there's so few people that can live there and this can happen any day again because there are still no wetlands. There are still no barrier islands. There is still none of the things that can stop our hurricane from being so devastating. And to add to it, with all of the dispersants that are put in the Gulf, every wild critter that lives out there is getting killed. All of the poor fishermen out there that have for generations on top of generations earned their livelihood fishing are wiped out. And I think it's a little too much. >> Last question, Jay Combe in New Orleans wants to know, " Is there any city in the world other than New Orleans that you can envision yourself living in and enjoying ?" >> Actually, no. I love New Orleans. I love my roots. I love my culture and my heritage. I've tried living in other places, but that's where my heart is still. >> Dr. John, thank you very much.
