## Transcript

The Legionnaires' outbreak in the South Bronx of New York City has claimed two more lives, bringing the total number of deaths to four. The NYC Health Department says 31 New Yorkers have been infected with the disease in the last three weeks. But residents aren't passing Legionnaires' disease from person to person. Instead, people are exposed to the Legionella bacteria through contaminated water systems. In this case several New York cooling towers .

>> That bacteria has been traced to cooling towers on the roofs of buildings. They found it a Lincoln Hospital. A hotel. A shopping center. A plastics business. And now a Verizon office. While health officials know which buildings have been contaminated they still don't know the original source of the outbreak. All of the contaminated cooling systems have now been cleaned, but officials expect more cases to appear. Symptoms of Legionnaires' disease can lay dormant for up to ten days. Legionnaires' disease is a severe type of pneumonia, with very similar symptoms like fever with chills, shortness of breath, chest pain, and severe cough.

According to the CDC, Legionnaire's Disease is readily treatable and most healthy people won't catch it even if they're exposed to Legionella but people older than 50, current or former smokers, people with chronic lung disease and those with a weakened immune system are at a higher risk. The NYC Health Department the four people who died from the disease had prior health conditions.
