Researchers are eager to collect this less controversial umbilical cord blood from the delivery room. But experts say 99 % of these potentially life saving resource gets thrown away postpartum. Reporter, Bonnie Rochman, visited researchers at Duke University will put together a cord- blood collection kit. It's being sent to expectant mothers who want to donate their baby's cord blood. >> Ladies who are interested in donating their baby's cord blood if they're living in an area where their hospital doesn't collect cord blood and they wanna donate their baby's cord blood to a public bank, to public programs so that if anybody can go in and go through the screening process to see if they're eligible. >> Now, tell me a little bit about the screening process. What do you need to have or do in order to be eligible? >> It's much like questions that you will answer if you want to go donate blood. >> Uh huh. So, once we answer those questions and the ladies around 34 weeks pregnant, we mail this kit out. It's a box that's specially designed for program for transport so that it keeps the collected cord blood and the maternal samples at stable temperatures throughout transport to us. Everything that's necessary to do this collection is in the kit. When she opens the box, there will be our envelope that contains the consent form, the medical history, a letter for her and a letter for the physician explaining the program. There's a film outer layer that keeps the temperature stable and then this Exo- Gel Panels. There's one on the bottom and then one on the top that sandwich all the cord blood unit and the maternal samples in. We don't want it to freeze, but we do want it to stay at a comfortable room temperature between 35 and 75 degrees. Then we receive the actual blood bags that the-- this kit's opened and there's a sterile blood bag in there to collect the cord blood unit in. They're shipping it back to us. They all get put in to the Propack envelope and placed in here on top of the Exo- Gel Panel, seal back up and send back in to us. We do provide an overnight pre- paid shipping [ unk ] absolutely no cost to the mom.
