## Transcript

Oscar Pistorius took the witness stand Monday to testify in his trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. He can't be seen on camera. But before questioning began, Pistorius made an apology, breaking down in tears. I'd like to apologize I can't imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness that I've caused you and your family. The South African former Olympian shot Steenkamp multiple times through the bathroom door of his home. On Valentine's Day last year this is the first time Pistorius has taken the stand he admits to killing Steenkamp but pleaded not guilty to premeditated murder last month saying he believed she was an intruder.

I was simply trying to protect Reeva I can promise that when she went to bed that night she felt loved. Pistorius said he's scared to sleep and has nightmares of the smell of blood and wakes up terrified. Pistorius also said he has been on antidepressants and sleeping medications since Steenkamp's death last February. He also talked about hardships during his childhood and growing up as a double amputee. Mentioned how his mother slipped with a gun as she was afraid of intruders. The BBC explains the defense is likely to portray Pistorius as a broken and vulnerable man. It's all about the psychology of how he was raised and then the fact that he, he was a, you know he was disabled and he had to go for a prosthetic leg.

But CBC explains prosecutors allege Pistorius killed Steencamp on purpose after the two got into an argument. They say he's hotheaded, obsessed with firearms and has an inflated sense of entitlement. Pistorius has yet to be questioned by the prosecution but NBC points out as the only eyewitness just how important his testimony will be in the outcome. Legal experts say it all comes down this now. No experts, no neighbors, just Pistorius all alone trying to convince the judge This was self defense, an honest mistake. If found guilty the man nicknamed Blade Runner, could face life in prison. I'm Jamal Andrews.
