The Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill was many things: an ecological disaster, a political crisis, a human tragedy, a corporate crime. Putting all of those stories in a frame is tough but that's what this photo does, capturing the trail of oil over the gulf that seems to lead back to the offshore race. I was there when this picture was taken, on a hot June day on the Gulf of Mexico. The photo shows us the consequences of our energy addiction. It helps us understand the entire story not its sliver. TIME has been covering environmental issues for decades. In 1988, instead of a Person of the Year winning the earth, our endangered earth as Planet of the Year.

When the science of climate change to fight over food, we've given you the story of the planet, how it impacts us, how we've impacted it. And we have a story as large as the planet, it helps to be able to count on overwhelming journalistic force. In 1989, TIME wants a 2- month long investigation to the causes behind another oil spill, the Exxon Valdez. TIME's reporters following the story from Alaska to Houston to New York will return the easy notion. The Valdez was due to the mistakes of single man instead a confluence of breakdowns that led to one of the worst environmental disasters in U. S.

history. Sometimes, we can tell that story with a single photo, as we did in the 1969 article about Cleveland's pollution Cuyahoga River. Like other industrial cities of the area, Cleveland was an environmental nightmare with water and its air poisoned. It wasn't a secret to the Cuyahoga with a mess but when TIME Magazine printed a photo of the river on fire, that galvanized an environmental movement that was just beginning to feel its strength. And sometimes we play a part in that movement. In 1987, TIME became one of the first major news outlets to hold a cover story to a phenomenon that had only been the problem of scientists and activists, global warming.

The Heat is On, TIME's Michael Lemonick wrote. The scrubbing for readers of greenhouse effect which steadily cook the planet, helping them on scientific and political debate that still rage us on today. Now is the time we'll back down from a fight when it comes to the environment and I should know. My 2009 cover story, The Real Cost of Cheap Food, took on industrial factory farming like in the case that are mainstream methods, harvesting crops and raising meat a disastrous consequences. That story struck a nerve on both sides. Green [ unk ] it, but the farming industry fought back. But that was the point, on an environmental issue where America remains deeply divided, TIME was willing to take a stand and start a conversation.
