We know that it involves bees who pollinate flowers and bring that pollen back to process it into the natural sweetener. But since 2007, bee keepers in the U. S. and around the world have been concerned about the sudden death of millions of honey bees. They don't know what's been causing the deaths. All they know is that the bees are leaving the colony and not returning. >> The colony collapse disorder, the reason why it was so distressing was that it was showing symptoms that were unknown. Something-- symptoms that we have not seen before. >> Jim Fischer is one of many bee keepers across the country who are particularly interested in a recent paper that described a possible culprit for the deaths. The researchers analyzed healthy and dying hives, and determined that a combination of a virus and a fungus were killing the bees. >> The virus is probably something that takes hold more readily when the intestinal infection is present because the virus is entering through the gut wall. So, the bee first gets the Nosema, and then the virus has an opening to get in and take over. >> Fischer says there are number of factors that can make hives particularly vulnerable to this one- two punch. Some keepers loan their hives out to farmers of apple and almond crops. >> Almonds is a very high- value crop in terms of what it pays the bee keeper. Many bee keepers need that money to survive as a business. Part of the problem with pollination, especially the almond pollination, is that it takes about half the colonies in the U. S. And when you take half the colonies in the U. S. and you put them all in one place, that's an environment where diseases and pests can be readily exchanged between colonies that otherwise would not have been exchanged because the colonies are up from all over. >> There isn't anything that keepers can do to prevent their hives from getting infected with the virus or fungus, but Fischer says there are things they can do to limit the risks. >> The authors of the paper have clearly stated that this virus is very fragile. Warmer temperatures can make this virus die.
