## Transcript

>> I live in Los Angeles, California. One day I realized there were a lot of pot stores in my neighborhood. So I decided to figure out how many. We're gonna go north on Fairfax towards Hollywood. Take a right on Melrose and then go south on the Brea. It's a few miles, but I'm gonna walk because it's such a beautiful day. What got me started thinking about this beyond the battle that is simmering between the dispensaries in the city, is that there's so many other businesses shutting down. Marijuana clinics seem to be the only real growth industry in Los Angeles right now. They're everywhere. Oops-- false alarm.

Only a couple of stores on Fairfax, but on Melrose, they are chock- a- block. Marijuana is huge business in California, but no one really knows exactly how huge. Cannabis advocates are quick to point out that legalizing the drug has generated tax revenue that keeps the cash straps state from further going into crisis. The funny thing is that even though Prop 215 made it legal in California to use Marijuana for medicinal purposes, the stories don't act like it. They still act secretive and well, paranoid. Finally, one shop owner agreed to talk to me. This is Matt Cohen.

>> Hi, come on in.

>> Owner of The Natural Way.

>> Welcome to The Natural Way. So come on in to the reception area. This is obviously the first lobby where we verify that a patient is actually medical marijuana patient. Once they've been verified, and they've done whatever paperwork they need to do, they can come on through here and we're gonna go into the actual dispensary. This is where we actually keep the marijuana. This shop has been around now for a little over 4 years. We have 2000 patients.

>> I did a little research and I found out marijuana has been used for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks used it, the pharaohs, the ancient Chinese. It allegedly treats all these conditions. Right now, the city is trying to nip unbridled growth in the bud.

>> We find ourselves right now the situation with our 1200 dispensaries in the city and the city trying to carve that down to 70. And I've liken this the explosion of medical marijuana dispensaries and outlets to the 1849 Gold Rush in Northern California. In 1849 when gold was discovered, the first handful of people made a lot of money. In 1850, the gold was gone. People were still coming. People were still buying prospectors, permits and licenses, but there was no gold. Nobody was making any money. A lot of people went bankrupt.

>> So I counted 24 medical marijuana clinics in 4 miles, but for those thinking about getting in on the action, this might be the high point for the marijuana Gold Rush in California. This is David Clair for TIME. com.
