>> Hundreds of people gathered at Madeira Beach to marvel, to see a 30- foot sperm whale just a wait away.

>> It is really interesting and it's a once in a lifetime thing to see.

>> Charlotte Graham, pulled her daughter Sarah out of school and into this sandy science classroom.

>> I wanted to see. I wanna be a marine biologist.

>> Calls about the beach whale started coming into wildlife officials about 715 sperm whales are normally a deep- water species. So to see one this close to shore immediately indicates something is wrong. And scientists describe this whale is being emaciated.

>> It's obviously very thin and sick and I can't really speak to, you know, what maybe going on inside the whale.

>> So while the curious crowd swelled, this quickly became a somber vigil with no chance for the whale to survive on its own. Wildlife officials began planning how to humanely end its life.

>> It's hard actually. You know, I'm an animal lover. It's just really sad.

>> About two of veterinarian for the University of Florida gave a whale a shot of a strong sedative and what comes next is a bit difficult to watch. A 6- foot needle was then plunged into the whale's chest cavity and a drug injected to stop its hard.

>> It's a little bit looks large and a little bit scary. It is a very humane thing to do.

>> Scientists do intend to perform a necropsy and for those watching the events of this day, knowledge for the future helps soften the sadness.

>> Yup. That's the only thing that you can really pull from anything like this. Do testing. Find out what's wrong and then hopefully find a cure.
