Identity theft is on the rise. But you can take steps to reduce the odds that someone will steal your name and your money. I'm Kristen Bellstrom and your Money Minute is starting right now. [ MUSIC ] The most important thing you can do is your check your credit cards and bank accounts every week or so. Be on the lookout for any transactions you don't remember making. You're also allowed one free report a year from each of the three credit agencies, so use them. Get one every four months and make sure all of the activity checks out. Next, eliminate your paper trail. It's easy for thieves to swipe info from mailboxes and trash cans.

So handle taxes, bill- pay, and other financial activities online whenever you can. Invest in a shredder for that paper you can't avoid. Be careful on the computer too. Make sure your online passwords are unique and complex. And don't click on any unknown links. Hackers often use virus- laced email links to access your computer and take your personal info. Finally, make sure you use anti- virus and anti- phishing software. Keep on top of operating system updates, and don't forget to password protect each of your devices. And that is 60 seconds well spent. [ MUSIC ]
