## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] 32 teams, seven rounds, and 256 picks, to select Exceptional college athletes to join the NFL for an opportunity to realize their dreams, and maybe even change their team's fate at this year's NFL draft taking place from April 26th to April 28th in Arlington, Texas. [ UNKNOWN ] One player can change your team. The stakes are high. and the stakes are even higher as this year's draft figures to be quarterback heavy. With potentially four signal callers like Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield all going in the top ten. Earlier, I sat down with Sports Illustrated senior writer Albert Greer to discuss how teams and experts are making sense of this year's nailbiter of a draft.

[ MUSIC ] Sports Illustrated Editor Albert Breer here with us. Welcome to the Break Down. Thanks for having me. Alright, now I'm gonna jump right into it. Now, this year's NFL draft is pretty much all about the quarterbacks, am I right? It's always about the quarterbacks. I mean, it's just the position's almost different than Any other in sports because it's separate from it's sport. They develop differently when their kids. They're recruited differently to college. They're coached differently when they get there. They're drafted differently into the NFL and then ultimately You wanna look at the salaries.

They're paid differently as pros. So, you can say it's all about the quarterbacks, but it's always all about the quarterbacks this time of year. So, sticking with the quarterbacks, walk us through some of the rising stars that we have here in the top ten. Yeah, and I think that there's a good chance that four guys go inside the top ten. Josh Allen from Wyoming. He's a bigger player. More physically gifted but a little more raw than the other 3. Sam Darnold from USC. Probably considered the safe bet of the 4. Baker may feel the Heisman trophy winner from the University of Oklahoma who Who is as well known as any of these quarterbacks.

A little unconventional, he's shorter, moves around a little bit differently. And then Josh Rosen, and he's from UCLA. He's probably been on the NFL's radar longer than the other three, but there are some personality questions with him. So each of these guys have potential to be franchise quarterbacks in the NFL, but each have significant holes. And I think for the teams that are drafting in the top ten, it's going to be with each kid, what can we coach this kid past? and of course, these are all guys that are ones to watch, but aside from skill, what are these teams looking for in certain players, let us say personality- wise, when it comes to making their best pick?

At that position, it is just the comfort level is the most important thing. Look, if you take, say [ UNKNOWN ], where they are running back from Penn State, or Quenton Nelson, the guard from Notre Dame Or Bradley Chubb. The defense event from NC State. In the top six or seven picks. It's important to your future. But you're probably not gonna get fired because of it. When you take a quarter back that high you are literary, and this goes for the general manager and the head coach. You are literary tying your job security to the guy. And so look, there's all this stuff that's important. Arm strength, mobility, the ability to see the field and go through progressions, all the different stuff that football- wise, you have to be comfortable with.

But then there's the comfort level with the person, too. And I think for John Dorsey, the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, who's gonna be making the decision on the number one overall pick, from Mike Maccagnan, the Jets general manager. For Dave [ UNKNOWN ] the Giants' General manager, when they're looking across the table at these quarterbacks, it's literally, am I comfortable tying my job security to this kid? And that's where personality can kinda play in to the way these teams view each of the prospects. Mm- hm, now we have the Cleveland Browns The New York Giants and Jets, and the Denver Broncos, they're all top picks.

And they're all quarterback needy teams. So, of course, each team is going to look for a different kind of QB. Yes. Each QB has their own distinct style, so In the fourth of those big four there becomes a demand for them. I think it's likely the Giants go the other direction and maybe either trade out, or draft a position player like a Barkley or a Chubb and then I think the broncos is sort of what player falls to them. I've heard that they like Mayfield I've heard that Gary Kubiak, who had been the coach there, Matt Russel who's a Personnel Chief there. They really like Mayfield, ultimately it's going to be John Elway's decision.

So I think you look at the top five there, Browns are taking a quarterback, Jets are taking a quarterback. The Giants right now, 24 hours out I would lean they're not going to take a quarterback. And then the Broncos I think if the right player falls to them, that they have a discussion about it. That's the intrigue about how the top five is going to go. Because on top of those five, you have also have some teams in Buffalo and Arizona who are going to be looking to make big moves up to go and get one. Of course, but you never know what is going to happen on draft day, rght? [ laugh ] So we'll see what happens.

Now the 2018 NFL draft is going to happen Thursday night April twenty- sixth in Arlington. Tech says so, we'll see what happens. Yep Alright, once again, Albert, thanks for chatting with us. Good luck with the show. Thanks.
