If the thought of writing that rent check every month makes you want to shed a tear every month, you're not alone. According to research from the Zillow Group, renting a place to live is less affordable than ever. US Renters now can expect to spend 30. 2 Percent of their monthly income on renting, compared to 24. 4 % people spent between 1985 and 2000. In some places, it's even worse. Renters in Los Angeles, Miami, San Jose, and San Francisco can expect to shell out more than 40 % of their monthly income to rent. Zillow says the uptick in cost was caused by strong demand in the rental market. Giving landlords plenty of room to jack up prices.

That could be because fewer people are actually buying homes in the US. A census bureau report for the second quarter of 2015 at home ownership rates at their lowest since 1995. But, believe it or not, it might actually be more affordable to buy your own home instead of renting it. That is if you can afford the down payment. Zillow says mortgage payments only take up about 15. 1 % of people's income.
