The base has been besieged for three months by hundreds of opposition fighters from this region. Defectors who have managed to escape say that as many as 350 government soldiers still trapped inside and supplies are running out. We're with a small detachment of local men from the Northern Storm Brigade. They way they're here to fight for God, their land, and their families. This is as close as we can get to the base without giving away our position in the open fields. We are about 400 meter, distance between us and the airport here. We tried to strike everyday, but it's very, very hard because our very, very heavy heavy weapon in the airport. More than 40 tanks. And maybe some chemical weapons. They warn us every day to put the mask, because our commander afraid that the Air Force may shell us by chemical weapon here. It's now almost impossible for the government to resupply Menagh with food, fuel, and ammunition. Rebel anti- aircraft guns positioned around the base shot this helicopter down a few weeks ago, as it came in low to try and drop off barrels of fuel. The rebels said six incenerated bodies were pulled from the wreckage. Among them was this man, [ UNKNOWN ], his ID card apparently survived the blaze. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ]. This is Najamaddin the commander of the small unit. He was a fruit seller in Beirut before the war, but he is now a self per claim jahadist. He also claimed that he went to fight the Americans in Iraq for a month, after the invasion in 2003. [ FOREIGN ] Abi was a school teacher before the war. He said that some government soldiers pretended to defect trying to escape from the base, but their plan was short lived. They are fighting us. But when we reached, when they reached to, to her place to, that they will die, they said, we escaped, we want to break away. That's, so, they killed them. Is there an [ INAUDIBLE ]? Because, if they didn't break away. For the revolution for these people just to, to survive. We connect with some soldiers now in the airport. They can't break away now. And when they have the chance, we forgive them. But another soldier? There's no way. You don't have to look far for the look far to find some of the reason for the anger consuming these people. This is the nearby town of Marinaz. More than 6, 000 people once lived here, but the streets are now abandoned and littered with unexploded cluster bombs and these enormous bomb craters. Observers have said, that this deliberate targeting of civilian areas, is part of a policy of collective punishment, designed to destroy communities that are thought, to have spawned the uprising. Yesterday eh, we lost one martyr, one person. He's, he was the commander here. And our attachment around the airport. And now you'll go to the cemetery and can see him. The commander, Abdul Hadi Salib, was married three months ago. Today, it's his funeral. He was shot by a sniper. [ FOREIGN ] The graveyard in Azaz was especially built for the town's war dead and it's filling up. Such a large gathering of opposition men would make a tempting target for government bombers, but the funeral goes ahead. The grief provides fertile ground for those calling for Islamic rule in Syria.
