## Transcript

>> I'm Jim Frederick for TIME. In November 2010, I sat down with Egyptian activist Mohamed ElBaradei at the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Hiroshima, Japan. This was just weeks before the Egyptian people launched the historic protest that captured the attention of the world. At the time of this interview, Egypt was preparing for an election that ElBaradei encouraged people to boycott and help circulate a petition demanding change.

>> In addition to boycotting the election, I'm also, you know, encouraging them to go through peaceful demonstrations, you know, to show their, you know, disapproval of the regime where they got torture, they got detained, you know, but you see every day there is a small demonstration, you know, a small protest somewhere.

>> Since ElBaradei spoke those words, those small protests have grown to a magnitude nobody could've foreseen. The streets of Cairo and cities throughout the country filled with millions of people demanding the fall of the government under President Mubarak. To ElBaradei this kind of pressure from the people is the only way to effect change.

>> You have to work from outside the system by as they said through petitions, you know through network, Facebook, you know, demonstration and I hope that the regime would listen to the, you know, unceasingly visible sound of the people. You know I think if Egypt's history today more than 90 percent of the people will tell you right away that we need change. I have on my Facebook 300, 000 young people and this is a country where the penetration of the network of the internet is 20 percent. I mean that's huge, you know, and it keeps growing. So change will come. It might take a bit of a time of course because to get a regime to surrender peacefully if you like and say we are ready to give a chance for another system and another people is not easy, but unless you keep the pressure and that's what I'm trying to do, keep the pressure through peaceful means.

>> As the protest escalated, ElBaradei returned to his home country and has emerged as the de facto leader in the opposition movement. In November I asked him the question that so many people would like to answer to today if he would run for president.

>> I will only consider running if they comply with all the demands which we have in the petition to make, you know, to level the field and if I have that the people want me to run then I would run, but that's not my priority. My priority at this stage is to see Egypt shifting into a democracy, because without democracy it's a dead industry, and if Egypt were to shift into a democratic regime that would have tremendous impact on the rest of the Arab world, and finally we will hope that we will join the rest of the world in moving and becoming part of the march for freedom and respect for human rights and development and social justice and all the values which I very much, you know, take to heart, you know.
