But is the deal overreaching? Or does it not go far enough? I'm Ben Goldberger and this is your brief. We have. A special responsibility to lead the global eff, effort against climate change. Why the special responsibility? Because together, the US and China emit almost 1 / 3 of the entire world's greenhouse gasses. Hence their plan, which is to reduce carbon emissions by 20 to 30 % over the next 15 years. Sounds good right? Well that's kind of in the eye of the beholder. Not surprisingly coal industry backers like soon to be Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell aren't too pleased. These carbon emission regulations are creating havoc in my state and other states around the country. And on the left many environmentalists don't think the deal goes far enough. Even China's top climate advisor said that the deal won't change too much because the country already had plans to wean itself off of carbon. But he did acknowledge a key point. The agreement could motivate other countries to decrease their own emissions. We'll see. India, the third largest carbon polluter in the world, is unlikely to follow suit anytime soon. But the deal's legacy may be diplomatic. The fact that the two biggest carbon polluters nad long time climate adversaries managed to work together, is the real reason this accord is historic.
