This is the day before the gates open and traditionally I would take the pensioners from the village around the site. >> Michael Eavis is the founder of the Glastonbury Festival, the world's largest greenfield and performing arts event and every year before they he opens the doors to more than a 100, 000 fans and hundreds of musicians, he lets the locals have a look at the grounds. >> Look at you. >> I [ unk ] then we got two bus loads. So that's about 100 people. They're all coming to have a look at the site and they get so excited about the buildup. You know, [ unk ] that is the middle of their village, you know. So you can come out and see for yourself and come and see the wonders of Glastonbury. >> The wonders of Glastonbury are many. The festival has something for everyone, from your favorite bands, to healing fields, and stone circles. All sharing space across 900 acres in the Vale of Avalon, the rumored resting place of King Arthur. >> Hello, hello, hello. [ unk ]. They are a lovely- they are volunteers so they do 14 hours for a free ticket. >> So, you know, we have the best bands in the world really, we don't care where they come from. Look we just go for the best, you know, we've always done that. So there's no politic about that. Really, we just want the best that we can get our hands on. And that's why we've got Springsteen and Neil Young this year, which is great. -[ unk ] and the group breaks for a cup of tea. Goose Hall is where many of the 37, 000 strong staff will be fed and watered during the festival. Eavis calls this place integral to the event. >> Everybody knows where Goose Hall is, it is the center of the site and it's own social area really for people to meet and things. And so the villagers, you know, they like to come here for a coffee- for a coffee break on the way around. >> Well, I'm taking the old- aged pensioners from the village where I live Hilton, around to the site which I've been doing now for 15 years. So I know more or less where to go when Michael just hopped on board and just tells me to carry on. Michael has always been around. You know, he cycles around the village on his push- bike, and I'd be yeah, see how things is going, so long. >> Michael Eavis is just a fantastic individual. He has- he has accomplished so much. >> Oh I came down to see King and Sheryl Crow and Status Quo this year and Bruce Springsteen, which I've lost a hair now to have the sweat band much. >> But that was the difference between an only commercial show and Glastonbury is that commitment by 20, 000 or 25, 000 people. It is salt of the earth, they got talent, you know, they got creativity, they got skills, they're clever. They're all beautiful, fantastically attractive people. And it's those people that make this work. It's not me. It's them really. >> Talent, creativity and cleverness. Some of the very traits TIME's editors considered when they named Eavis one of this year's TIME 100, the list of the world's most influential people. ColdPlay's Chris Martin who wrote the appreciation in the magazine, says he owes his life and career to Eavis. >> Great. That is very nice. I'm gonna have the letter right? [ unk ] I've been chosen as one of the influential top 100 in the world and I thought, why on earth? Yeah. The world is a bit big, isn't it? And so I've turned the thing over to see if someone else's name is on the envelope. How could- it was my name on the envelope. By 2020 I'll be 80. Really, I'm gonna finish in 2010. [ unk ] or something. I 0: 358 stop, when they see the writing on the wall. >> And Eavis says that writing might have come from Banksy, the famous street artist whose work at Glastonbury has been mistakenly removed by the festival's anti- graffiti volunteers. >> I see Banksy is gonna tell me when I can't do it anymore and so he wrote on the wall. But he is doing stuff for us now and he goes around every night yeah. I'm having some trouble with my anti- graffiti people but- and I said: " no that's Banksy. Leave it ".
