## Transcript

A federal judge has struck down another piece of Arizona's strict immigration law addressing the last of the Obama Administration's challenges to the hard- line policy. The ruling applies to Arizona's 2005 immigrant smuggling law which was updated as part of the 2010 law. The smuggling law gave local authorities rather than federal ones the power to prosecute smugglers who brought illegal immigrants. To cross the Arizona border. Time writes the law came under fire when " more than 2, 000 immigrants who paid to be sneaked into the country were charged with conspiring to smuggle themselves across the border ." US District Judge Susan Bolton struck down that part of the Arizona law Friday claiming it gives local officials power that is exclusive to Federal authority.

Bolton wrote in her decision, it imposes additional and different state penalties than federal law. It divests federal authorities of the exclusive power to prosecute these specific smuggling crimes. That state overreach is the same reason three out of the four major provisions of Arizona's controversial 2010 immigration law were thrown out. The Supreme Court struck down other parts of Arizona's law. Declaring that states can't make it a state crime to be in the U. S. illegally or make it a crime to get a job in the U. S. And while the courts have struck down much of the 2010 law, the Supreme Court did uphold what critics call the Show Me Your Papers provision, likely the most controversial piece.

It is irresponsible for any city. State or elected official to legalize racial profiling and discrimination. The law requires that when Arizona law enforcement detains someone if they have a reasonable suspicion that the person is an illegal immigrant, they must determine whether they are.
