It captured a moment on VJ Day of excitement and jubilence. So many people have come forward and said that was me, so we really don't know. When I saw that magazine, I looked at it. I said damn it that's me. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] If you go back, say five months from that day, two **** suicide planes crashed in to the deck of the bunker hill. All from the flight deck down to the water was nothing but a curtain of flame. And we was the only ship close to the [ UNKNOWN ]. The guys had jumped off the [ UNKNOWN ] the hell we picked up, and some of these guys were hurting bad, I mean real bad. And we went alongside the [ UNKNOWN ] ship and were transferring the wounded over. And those nurses were going right to work on these guys. Well that's stuck in the back of my head I think the rest of my life. [ MUSIC ] So we get into Times Square now, and the war ends, and I see the nurse. And it was just plain instinct I guess, I went and I grabbed her. From the offices of the Time and Life building they sent Alfred Eisenstaedt and William Shroud. So they just came, walked down to Time Square, just a few blocks from their office and started shooting. It's clear from the interviews that when he shot the one photo that ran in the magazine, he knew that was his shot. He had followed that sailor down the street. For blocks and he was kissing everyone. He saw a flash of white and he turned around and got the picture and he shot four frames. I haven't found a person yet, that I haven't convinced. And the first thing that caught me when I looked at the picture was the size of the hands. I says, God, that's my hands! And there's the lump inside the left arm. There's a scar here, that was from a bar room fight. My wife, she can be identified in that photo. That's the famous picture in Times Square, and there she is. She gets annoyed when people kind of try to knock her down by saying he did that and you're with him?
