## Transcript

>> that would be St. Edward's chair.

>> People who carve their names on.

>> Listen to me, listen to me!

>> Why should I waste my time listening to you?

>> Cause I have a voice!

>> Yes you do.

>> Will the voters of the Motion Picture Academy give their top prize to a film about a King of England, or about TIME's person of the year? I'm Richard Corliss, a film critic for TIME, and we're gonna look at this year's Oscar nominations and my humble predictions. Here is Best Director. The winner here will depend on the Academy voter's notion of what a director does.

>> Do you know my name, dear?

>> Is it Stanford?

>> I should just kick your ass.

>> Is he the imposing orchestrator of another man's script as David Fincher was with Aaron Sorkin's Social Network screenplay?

>> What will I call you?

>> Your Royal Highness.

>> And soon after that, how about Betty?

>> Is he an actor's director, like Tom Hoover, eliciting well- judged performances from his stars.

>> I watched the way she moves.

>> Been precise. Effortless. She's not faking it.

>> Is he a cinematic Svengali, horsewhipping his performers to psychological extremes? Darren Aronofsky did that with Natalie Portman and her weird sisters in Black Swan.

>> I'm the one fighting okay, not you, not you, and not you!

>> David O. Russell, did it with everyone but Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter.

>> In your four years as US Marshal, how many men have you shot?

>> Shot? Or killed?

>> Let us restrict it to kill so that we have a manageable figure.

>> Or is their favorite director a Coen brother making a Western? Last time Joel and Ethan did that, they won three Oscars with No Country for Old Men.

>> What are you doing?

>> Checking in to see how it's going in Bosnia.

>> Bosnia? They don't have roads for their peace book.

>> I think we can firmly count on David Fincher, who is among the elite Hollywood directors, but has been nominated only once before. And this year, he will take home the gold. And finally, Best Picture. Forget the other eight films. This is a two- horse race between the Social Network and the King's Speech. The Social Network is smart, funny, nasty, and very at the moment. But is it too smart for its own good? Everyone admires it. But do they love it? -[ unk ] years with two hours.

>> They, the Academy members, love the King's Speech.

>> Dah, mah, bah.

>> It was perfectly designed for them. It fits nearly all the requirements for a best picture winner.

>> The greatest test is yet to come.

>> Set in the historical past, with Hitler's shadow looming, it features a real life figure battling a severe disability.

>> I have the scene--

>> And it's got all these English people. So the choice between these movies is clear, the agitated future of film, or its more decorous past. Head versus heart. The same contrast applied in the Oscars of 1942, when a complex study of a media mogul was up against a more traditional family drama set in the United Kingdom. And How Green Was My Valley won Best Picture over Citizen Kane.
