Then Deputy President of the formerly banned African National Congress, Mandela was accompanied by a large contingent from that opposition party. As the tour's national coordinator noted, this was not some kind of a victory lap. The group had two main goals in mind. First, to thank activists who had supported the fight against apartheid, and keep pressure for change in the South African government. The tour included a stop in Boston. Massachusetts was the first state to pull its pension funds from companies that did business with South Africa. He also stopped in New York to meet with leading US business figures, some of whom still had financial ties to South Africa. The tour's second goal was to raise money. The group hoped to raise $ 1 million in each city visited. WBUR spoke with a public relations executive who coordinated the visit to Boston, who noted these were men who had been in prison for 27, 30 years. They had a movement that had no significant money, and if you're going around for office, if you're going to mount a serious campaign, you need to raise money. That effort was helped by some high- profile appearances. He called for an end to apartheid during his speech at a sold- out Yankee stadium where he later donned the Yankee hat and jacket, and proclaimed, " I'm a Yankee ." And while in Washington DC, Mandela became the only third private citizen in US history to address a joint meeting of Congress. Mandela would later be elected President of South Africa in 1994. He only served one term, but remained a symbol of leadership in South Africa until his death.
