But, like any journey, this one also has it's high notes. And the border between Serbia and Hungary is one of them. This is where tens of thousands of asylum seekers have crossed into the European Union this summer. Many of them seem to radiate relief as they approach the border. We are coming from Syria and we're trying to go to Germany. But the good mood usually doesn't last too long. For one thing, the migrants soon confront the fence that Hungary erected in late August when the wave of migration peaked. In most places it's made of razor wire and, And easy enough to climb. But the hard part is avoiding the police patrols that guard it. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Those who get caught or decide to turn themselves in are usually taken to a collection point just inside the Hungarian border. This is where the sense of relief usually subsides. The heat is brutal and the wait is long before police can identify the migrants and transport them to a detention camp a few miles deeper into Hungary. Conditions there are also Are rough. There has been rampant overcrowding. The migrants complaining of not being allowed to travel onward toward Germany, where they want to apply for asylum. Where do you want to go? I want to go to Germany! They open the gates for us, Thank you Angela Merkel!! Thank you Angela Merkel. We won't thieve now. Usually after a day or two in the camps, Hungarian police herd the migrants onto trains bound for the capital, Budapest, where they're told to report to immigration authorities and apply for refugee status. But most of them ignored those instructions. Instead, in early September, they occupied a train station in Budapest and demanded the right to travel to Germany. They slept wherever they could, on thin mats, in tents, or simply on the ground. And for several days they protested outside the station while they stood guard. Finally on September 5th, the Hungarian authorities relented [ FOREIGN ] They ordered buses to carry the migrants to the border with neighboring Austria. And with that, the last major roadblock on the migrants' path toward Europe was removed. Their determination had prevailed and they had a lot more reasons to celebrate.
