## Transcript

On Friday, the White House will announce an expansion of federal marriage benefits to same sex couples. The President is pushing to expand protections. By allowing same sex couples to take advantage of the same federal benefits available to married, heterosexual couples. The White House says it will extend new coverages to same sex couples within the limits of existing laws. Representatives told the Wall Street Journal, in almost all instances, Federal benefits and obligations for same sex married couples will be provided. Regardless of where the couple lives. President Obama's administration also plans to amend laws to give same- sex couples more benefits.

In particular, expanding the Family and Medical Leave Act to apply to all married couples. That means same sex spouses will be able to take unpaid time off to take care of their partners. NPR reports the labor department is expected to implement national rules to handle the new claims. The new measures are part of the White House' continued compliance with last year's Supreme Court ruling. Which struck down parts of the Defense of Marriage Act. And extended more rights and benefits to same sex couples. The list is not all inclusive. But KTTV reports legislators are still working to check things off.

The White House says Democrats in Congress have also introduced new bills expanding social security and veteran's benefits for same sex couples. Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia, have legalized same- sex marriage. It remains illegal in the other 31. Thanks for watching. I'm Megan Judy.
