Evzio, is a Naloxone syringe, that helps counteract the effects of heroin, and prescription pain killers, by preventing them from acting on the brain's opioid receptors. The concept is a proven one, according to the Los Angeles Times. It's the same kind of drug emergency medical workers have used to counteract overdoses for years. But now, instead of a syringe, it's available as an automatic injector anyone can use. Kind of like an Epi- pen for allergic reactions. The CDC says prescription drug overdoses have more than tripled since 1990, thanks in part to a more than three fold increase in the sales of opioid painkillers. Evzio is the latest in a series of recent campaigns to help bystanders prevent overdoses on drugs like heroin. WHEC reports on an [ UNKNOWN ] nasal spray recently distributed to law enforcement in New York. It's no question that it is saving lives, and by expanding it's availability today we will save many more lives. But some officials, including Maine governor Paul LePage worry about the easy availability of such drugs. Do you believe that it should be distributed to parents, for example? No. Who have a child.
