We caught up with some of them a year later, to see what they're up to now, and what they've accomplished. [ SOUND ] Valentine Abe is from the Ivory Coast, and received his PhD in Fisheries from Auburn University. He went to Haiti to volunteer, and never left. Originally only six month Contract. And now it's 13 years. And I'm still here in Haiti, loving it. Although Haiti is surrounded by ocean, Abbay thought the country could take better advantage of it. I always believe, ever since I set foot in Haiti, that fish farming will be the solution for Haiti. Solution to improve nutrition, solution to create jobs, and solution to generate revenue. His idea to start a talapia hatchery was met with criticism at first, so, he started it with his own money, but when the project began feeding, employing, and empowering Haitians. Aubee got noticed. Aubee's innovative work was recognized by Time, and since then, Aubee's organization, the Caribbean Harvest Foundation, has expanded to include education about health and nutrition. To build a brand new industry in one of the poorest countries in the world is arduous work, but Aubee still finds it's worth it. Regardless of all the problems, the difficulties, you have to stay positive. And then, and, and you, you, you can see that when we go to the village, even, even if they have eaten all day long, but you can see the enthusiasam You know, harvesting fish and all those things. I mean that's, that's really beautiful. [ MUSIC ] These are the scenes of chaos that have erupted in Haiti. Global Medic's here to give people hope. Rahul Singh is a Toronto based paramedic and the head of Global Medic. Immediately after the quake, They worked with local agencies to provide emergency care and get crucial resources to people, including clean water. In Haiti you had to be really innovative. We took little portable units, put em on motorcycles, had local kids on the motorcycles go set up at, at a Texaco and at a corner st, store where the pipe would be broken. Run the bike all day. Power the unit, portable unit off the bike. And produce and filter and clean that water and hand it out. And because everybody knew who that kid was; they played soccer with him, the librarian was there, the teachers were there, they all knew who these people were, they had more security. So there was no violence, no looting. It was just folks who came to get their water every single day. [ MUSIC ] Months later a cholera epidemic broke out. And turmoil after the country's presidential elections shut down basic services. If you're carrying your bucket of water home, what if you're, walked by somebody and bump into em that has the dirty water Bucket and, you know, you get cross contamination. We started giving household systems two large buckets on top of each other, four ceramic filters in between. And, and then a spigot at the bottom. So the idea is, you would take your rain water, you would take your well water, your river water, whatever water you had. And then you had Pinchin clean water that you could use for your family. So far those efforts have gotten sustainable, clean water to 20, 000 people, in schools, tent cities, and homes. I think the, the proudest I am of it is of our local scene. They were all kids that lost houses, lost loved ones, a parent, a sibling. All get forced to live in these crappy camps for the longest times. Some are still in them. But they didn't lose hope. Time honored Ben Stiller in 2010 for his organisation Stillerstrong. Which works with several different charities to develop schools in Haiti. Last year, Time talked to Bryn Mooser, the country director for Artists for Peace and Justice. It was very important to get tents set up right away [ NOISE ] So that even though school wasn't in session, we could have day camps and daycare facilities going on. [ FOREIGN ] After the initial crisis response, Artists for Peace And Justice along with Architecture For Humanity began tackling their dream project, starting a free secondary school. We've supported primary schools for the last three years, but after sixth grade there's really no options to continue your education for somebody who literally Has no money. mmm The organization found a piece of land, built a school, and opened it in October, staffed with local teachers and administrators. 400 students will graduate the 7th grade this June. And when the school is fully up and running, it will serve 3, 000. These things take a long time. And there are frustrations, but There's a tremendous amount of hope and there's a tremendous amount of really good projects that are happening and that's our focus. It's focusing on the hopeful stories.
