If I don't do it, I get depressed. >> Down in the valley where the grass is growing tall and green. And the records are-- they kind of become like chapters in my life, I guess. >> I sleep in the dandelion fields. >> But for me, I can look back at the record I made five years ago and think about where I was. You know, it's kind of a really personal thing. >> And all those pretty, pretty things. >> I'm Josh Rouse. I'm from Nebraska. Well, I was born there. And then I ended up moving all over the States. >> It's a long walk home but I found my beat. >> And then when I moved to Spain, and living there, I kind of feel like finally I found the place that like, it suits me, you know. So Lemon Tree is a kind of a song about being, finding your place in the world, I guess. >> You count eleven those are kisses that you took from me. >> My wife's from Valencia. So we lived there for a while then we moved to New York and we've got a child then we moved back to Valencia. El Turista took me about a year and a half to make. I just wanna do something really different. Just to take kind of a hard left turn. I've been a big fan of Brazilian music for a long time. And living in Spain, you know, living on the Mediterranean, just living in that climate and living on the coast, you know-- that music just really seems to fit. So you know, I've gotta try to create my own twist on Mediterranean music, I guess, some kind of a Brazilian rhythms and Spanish lyrics, English lyrics. But you know, that's my, you know, my taste in music. I listen to Brazilian music all the time. And I also listen to like, you know, 40's and 50's jazz and things like that. So I want that to come through in the music because I wanna impose my taste on other people. >> Used to work the discos, I used to work the door until I was convicted of a crime I did not score. Someone stole some diamonds, he looked a lot like me. So I serve my sentence and soon I will be free. >> I was playing in Brazil about a couple of years ago. We drove by this really depressing prison right by the Interstate. And there were men just hanging out the window, trying to keep cool. So, I had the idea to write about a guy that's gonna get out, you know, so it's kind of a happy song. So, it's a-- it's a positive thing about a guy that's gonna get out and then, you know, in a few months or something like that, he's gonna go, you know, escape and live on islands. >> I will live on islands and I will see the sun.
