## Transcript

>> We talked a lot tonight of course about the words that have been spoken, but now we wanna try to break down some of the evening through the images. Joining us now, TIME's deputy photo editor, Paul Moakley. He's brought the table some of the pictorial highlights of the evening. So, Paul, this is a great night, a television event, but as with all great live events, great photography in there, and you watched the event and looked at both on the video and then in stills that came in for some of the best stuff. Some pretty good photos from before the event. Talk to us through those.

>> Sure. The State of the Union we've been watching all night on wires, and there are a lot of great photographs coming through, which we'll be putting up on TIME. com as we speak. It's definitely a visual challenge for photographers, but I think we could jump right into the photos.

>> Sure.

>> The first photo we have is a great sort of establishing shot. It just sets up the drama for the night, shows the room. I can imagine the pressure that the president must be feeling at this moment. The second picture is--

>> This is the president

>> entering the hall with a lot of energy, right?

>> Yes. He is coming out of the gate and he is doing a fist pump and just kind of exploding into the room, a really fun image by Brendan Smialowski.

>> Okay.

>> The next image, we have a really great moment between-- it's either moment of friendship or we're- not- meantship between Biden and Boehner, just getting ready waiting for the president to arrive. Then, the next image, a really interesting image. I think you can call the perfect illustration sort of life in the Senate. You have Cory Booker, very hopeful on one end, all the way on the left, and going through from Rubio to Gillibrand and John McCain, who's seen about just everything and ran for presidency twice.

>> Great image.

>> Great image.

>> Also a great image.

>> Yes. We have--

>> This is another-- another pre- game photo off.

>> Willie Robertson, CEO and star of Duck Dynasty, and with Paul Ryan, just a really fun moment before the president came in.

>> Okay.

>> First lady obviously, front and center all night. Lots of reaction shots of her, and we see her in her box with special invited guests, many of whom got shout outs, and there she is getting a hug from one of them. Very nice.

>> Yes, I think everyone is always interested in who's sitting with the first lady.

>> Yeah.

>> And then we go into a closer shot. It's really-- I'm sorry, one before that. It was a great moment with Cory Remsburg.

>> Yeah.

>> And then here we have two of the-- one of the survivors of the Boston bombing, Jeff Bauman with Carlos Arredondo, who was the cowboy. You might remember him in a cowboy hat who rescued him.

>> Yeah. And now this is during the speech of president. Pretty confident all night, and you've seen that look before that image.

>> Definitely. I've seen him turned to the first lady before. I've loved seeing this photograph, and he usually turns and winks to her.

>> Yeah. Very nice. Okay, keep going. There is another shot that we saw, the video of that earlier, the moment where the president paid homage to John Boehner's roots and got a little weepy there, and you can see the classic Boehner--

>> Yes. Not a surprise.

>> Boehner pose. Okay.

>> Not a surprise from Boehner to see that.

>> There is Ted Cruz ,--

>> Looking--

>> looking Cruzy.

>> Looking a little impatient.

>> Yeah.

>> But a great photo. I love the composition here.

>> Yeah. That's it. And there's the president as he departs.

>> Yes. So, it's just a really nice moment of the president leaving and by Charles Dharapak of the AP.

>> Great. Paul Moakley bringing your eye and that great tradition of TIME in photography to the State of the Union. Thanks for joining us. Appreciate it. Closing thought from you, Michael Shear about, again, going forward, the president is gonna do some travel. We know in the next couple of days to try to keep the momentum alive as presidents do, as we like to say, what did he accomplish? What did he-- how did he move things along with his speech in any way?

>> I think he reestablished himself as the leader he wants to be. I am not very optimistic on his behalf that a month, three months from now, the speech will have had much impact. I think the cycles we're in now, these things tend to get swamped very quickly. The challenge for Democrats and for the president will be to now find other excuses over the coming weeks and months to keep these messages out there in the public eye and to avoid the Republican message.

>> Rona, as you said, nothing on tax reform, nothing on entitlement reform, but some economic proposals and some announcements of working with corporations. What do you see going forward?

>> I think the most hopeful thing is the idea about education reform and really bringing together educators and businesses, job creators, making sure that we have the kind of skill set to really take advantage of the opportunities we have.

>> Okay.

>> This concludes TIME's historic first coverage of an anchored event, President Obama's State of the Union address. For more on the president's speech, all the reaction from around the United States, around the world, as well as analysis and the photos that Paul mentioned, you can check out TIME. com right this minute and all through the night and into tomorrow morning here in the East and around the world, but for now, that concludes this coverage. We appreciate you joining us. For all of us here from the Time- Life Building on 6th Avenue in New York City, I'm Mark Halperin. Thanks again for joining us.

Good night.
