Now the lava is approaching a nearby energy plant that uses highly flammable gas in its process. Kilowaia's volcanic eruptions aren't anything new. Lava has continuously flowed from this volcano since 1983. About 90 % of the volcano is covered in lava less than 1, 000 years old. But the latest eruption is no longer contained in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's moved into residential areas. Over 20 fissures or cracks have opened up since May 3rd in Kilauea's east rift zone, where some people live. Lava has gushed hundreds of feet into the air, hit one resident, shattering his leg. Swallowed cars and destroyed about 25 homes. The volcano had its biggest explosion this past Thursday when a 30, 000 foot ash cloud burst into the sky, and it's not over. Experts warn the problem with lava flows are their absolute uncertainty. The lead scientists from the US Geological Survey predict these eruptions may go on for weeks. A volcano is considered potentially active if it has erupted in the past 10, 000 years. The United States has 168 active volcanoes found in Hawaii, Alaska, Wyoming, Washington. Washington and California. Globally, there are 1, 500 active volcanoes, but only 500 have erupted in human history. That's why there are about 800 million people living within 60 miles of an active volcano. And while the area affected by lava and ash in Hawaii is small compared with the rest of the big island, experts are worried about the volcano's broader effect. Over the weekend, lava began streaming across a highway and into the Pacific Ocean, creating something called Laze, which is made up of hydrochloric acid and fine glass particles that can irritate skin, eyes and cause breathing problems. In fact, the hydrochloric acid in Laze has been compared to battery acid. More than the lava itself, it's the toxins pouring out of the volcano that caused great concern. Sulfuric acid gas can be toxic and it can be very corrosive, if you think back on the era of toxic rain and you think of maybe you used to see buildings and statues that had sort of half corroded away as. A result of acid rain. This can happen in Hawaii as well. So if the bulb spreads further then it could reach well beyond the island. Certainly all of Hawaii is in the footprint of potential Danger. The bigger thing that everyone else has to worry about is how far this haze travels once it rises up into the atmosphere. The further the haze climbs, the easier it is for it to spread around the world. Again, there is no telling how far it will reach. Hawaii will endure. A volcano will not destroy even the big island, never mind The rest of Hawaii. Remember all of these islands are the result of millions of years of volcanic activity, and in the long run volcanic activity is constructive, not destructive.
