## Transcript

In the surf community it's one of the best kept secrets. Miles of untouched golden sands, warm waters, and most importantly, a rhythmic pounding of perfectly formed waves. Close to Liberia's border with Sierra Leone, Robertsport is building a name for itself as one of the best surf spots in Africa. American Shaun Brody opened the country's first surf school here five years ago. It's picturesque. I think this is a little bit different, than what most people imagine when they hear Liberia. It's still the nation's devastating civil war that most people think of. Decrepit plantation- style houses, abandoned since the war, line wide boulevards.

But ten years after the peace accord that ended the conflict, cautious optimism is lapping at Liberia's northwestern shores. There's definitely a big ripple effect and you can see infrastructure build around niche forms of tourism. And in my personal and professional opinion, surfing tourism at the moment is one of the only draws, but I do believe that a tourism can grow. Getting here is not easy, though. It's a 70 mile drive from Monrovia, partly on dirt roads. Flights are expensive and tourist infrastructure almost non- existent. Keeping Robertsport firmly off the beaten track. Actually in other places, when you are alone, you are lucky.

And here it's like when you have even someone to share your your good wave with, then you're lucky so, [ LAUGHS ]. While some intrepid surfers may want to keep the coastline a secret, locals in Robertsport are hoping to ride a new wave of tourism and wash away the poverty and memories of a brutal past from this fishing community for good.
