Every year about a quarter of Americans wait till the bitter end to file their taxes. If you're getting a late start, we've got Jill Schlesinger, financial expert, here to give you some tips. Thank you Jill. God, it's good to be here but I am so sorry you waited this long. [ LAUGH ] So what can procrastinators do now? What should you do? Okay you gotta clear your schedule out. Okay. Because it's probably gonna take you about 16 hours to prepare your taxes. That's according to the irs. Good news if you're an easy filer that's only four hours but you know look you got a few extra days because of this weird holiday in DC so it's April 18th And I will suggest that if you are filling, please no paper returns, the error rate is something like twenty percent with the paper returned.

You do want to E- File if you can. Okay, what if you're just not make the deadline? Well, okay. The IRS knows people like you, they're fine with that. [ LAUGH ] But you've got to tell them that you're not going to file. So you're gonna file for an extension And the deal with an extension that's kind of interesting is that you can apply and say hey I don't wanna have to actually do my taxes till October. However, there's a wrinkle in this. The IRS says you have to pay us what you think you owe us based on last year and based on what's going on this year. So you still have to send some money and make an estimate of what you think you owe Without actually filing the whole return.

How long will it take to file an extension? You get until the October 15th deadline if that's the only extension you're filing and I think that it's certainly a good idea. Especially if you think you need help with your taxes. I would actually argue that Maybe getting that extensions of good idea waiting till the CPA's and the tax prep people or kinda calm down. And then a month from now. He can go in and it leisurely pays get it done. What if he just can't pay this sheriffs? Money is tight You just don't have the money right now. You can actually apply for a 120 day extension to pay so, that's kind of your first place to start.

The other thing you can do, is you can actually create an installment plan with the IRS. If there's even the ability, which is really weird, is that you could put your bill. Your tax payment on a credit card, but it's really expensive so try to avoid that. It's not the best way to go, but here's the most important message. Don't go dark. Do not blow off the IRS. That is not your best path forward. Be in communication, they will work with you. Thank you so much Jill, now everyone finish your taxes.
