>> While most people do all they can to stay away from tornadoes, some scientist actually seek out the twisters.

>> Tracing the tornado is much like hunting for any large dangerous animal. If you see one when you're out there hunting, well, that's a good thing, if one comes in to your tent when you're sleeping in the middle of the night. That's not such a good thing.

>> Helping scientists avoid surprises is a network of Doppler radars.

>> Doppler radars allows us to see the winds within the storm. And by using those winds, they provide forecasters with heads up.

>> And smaller portable Doppler radars are currently being used in a new field project, called Vortex 2.

>> One of the big things of Vortex 2 intends to do, is to collect the most complete 3- dimensional pictures of the atmosphere in the time span around the tornado that we've ever seen.

>> Brooks hopes data collected from Vortex 2 will result in even greater accuracy in short- term tornado forecasting. And as for long- term predictions-

>> Our best estimate right now, is it in the future they'll be more favorable environments for severe thunderstorms in United States. It's not clear that's gonna translate into more tornadoes.

>> Brooks says that further study is needed to determine if a warming climate leads to more tornadoes, or causes a change in where, and when tornadoes appear. For Climate Central, I'm Dr. Heidi Cullen.
