In China about 400 million people were not born because of the country's controversial one child policy. That's more than the population of the entire United States. After 36 years China has recently decided to abandon the policy Now couples can have two kids instead of one. And for good reason. Right now, East and Southeast Asian countries are struggling to get their populations to have kids. A country need an average birthrate of 2. 1 kids per woman to maintain their populations. But China has a rate of 1. 6 and others are even worse off. Japan has a rate of 1. 4, South Korea 1. 25 and Singapore 0.

8. Scientists call this ultra low. If countries' populations decline, they face financial disaster, a generation of unmarried men, And they may even go extinct. It sounds far- fetched, but South Korea predicts that at this rate, its population will be a grand total of zero by 2750. Japan predicts it'll be gone in 1000 years. So what's the solution? Well, Singapore declared a national night. Where the government ran ads, asking citizens to do their, quote, civic duty, and make babies. Fireworks, or parades. But I like that stuff. I'm talking about the stuff after that stuff. Japan is paying for speed dating and matchmaking events.

[ FOREIGN ] Asia really needs a baby boom, but with tough economic times and uber competitive job markets, governments are struggling to get their young people to fall in love. [ MUSIC ]
