## Transcript

[ MUSIC ]. Now that your summer brain freeze is over. It's time to pay attention to your retirement account. Act now before you get stuck in the crazy holiday season. Here to help us get back on track is Jill Schlesinger. Hi Jill .

>> Hello

>> How's it going ?

>> Great. So talk us through asset allocation, what do we need to know? Everyone seems to really hyper focus on asset allocation. And what we know is your allocation is important, but most important is that you're actually contributing to your retirement plan, right? But what you really need to be thinking about is How long before I need my money and how comfortable I am with risks. A lot of plans have risk assessment questionnaires. You complete them and if it seems about right, it'll basically give you an allocation that is in line with your goals and objectives. And of course, when you need your money.

So what's most important is your contributing enough money and going through this process and being really diligent Don't go crazy about whether it's 70 / 30 or 80 / 20. So how much money should people be thinking about? Let's give you some hard targets. Right. You come out of college and you've got some debt, right? If possible what you're going to do is try to contribute at least up to whatever the match is at your employer. If you don't have a match Just try to put a few percent in, and while you're paying down your debt, you do a little bit of both. As you get into your 30's, 10- 15 %. Just do it.

I know you've got kids. Your life is changing. It doesn't matter. You've got to save for your retirement. And then in your 40s and 50s, you're trying to max out. Maximum means this year, $ 18, 000. Right. Huge amount of money, still want you to try to do it. Where do people put their money once they start putting it away? What kind of funds should they think about? I am such a huge fan of index funds because I think that very Clearly data show us that when you invest in an index fund, you're going to get this broad diversification. Mm- hm. You're going to reduce your expenses, and that money you save is going to fall to your bottom line.

Right. However, I know a lot of people starting off, they don't wanna go pick different funds in different categories so they'll pick a target- date fund. Now some target- date funds are very reasonable in cost. Others, not so much. Right. And one other part about target- date funds, a lot of people learned during the financial crisis and during these market downturns. Some of these funds are riskier than you may feel comfortable absorbing. So, you got to check how much risk is inside that fund. But after all is said and done, if you stick to index funds and you put money away out of every paycheck you will be fine.

Thank you Jill. Great to be with you.
