## Transcript

Veteran actor James Garner has died at the age of 86. According to CNN, police were called to Garner's Los Angeles residence Saturday night where he was found to have died of natural causes. Garner was best known for his two leading television roles, playing the roguish poker player Bret Maverick in the 1950s Maverick and L. A .- based private investigator Jim Rockford in the 1970s series The Rockford Files. But the Oklahoma native appeared in more than 50 films as Rom. Including a 1994 movie based off his Maverick tv show with Mel Gibson. And more recently the 2004 romance, The Notebook. His portrayal of a small town druggist in the 1985 romantic comedy Murphy's Romance gained him an academy award nomination.

Fellow actor Norm Macdonald described through a series of tweets, a poker game he once played with Gardner, where a straight flush beat Norm's four of a kind. When reviewing his memoir, the Gardner Files, the Los Angeles Times writer in 2011 described the writer as first and foremost a gentleman, the sort that lives by a personal code that preaches patience and tolerance up to a point. And in a 1984 interview with the New York Times Garner frankly explained his feelings towards acting. Saying, I was never enamored of the business, never even wanted to be an actor really. It's always been a means to an end, which is to make a living.

Garner is survived by his wife, daughter, and two step children.
