## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] China has reportedly banned state purchases of products from several major US tech companies including Cisco, Apple, Centrex, and Intel. The ban, first reported by Reuters on Wednesday, means that Chinese government will no longer buy products from those companies and use them in its administrations [ INAUDIBLE ] [ MUSIC ] Although it's hard to say why the companies were black listed without official comment from the government. Analysts seem to think the move was two fold. First, for security, ever since Edward Snowden leaked 10's of 1000's of classified documents revealing the extent of NSA spying, China's become wary of using products from US tech companies.

A researcher with China's Ministry of Commerce told the Washington Post foreign brands would drop as a matter of national security, saying quote, it's the effect of Snowden and PRISM. But analysts are pointing to another reason. China's domestic market. With Cisco removed from the Chinese government's list of approved products, Huawei, Cisco's Chinese equivalent, can now step in to fill the hole. HUAWEI was already banned from bidding for U. S. government contracts, or large U. S. telephone deals. Fortune's Scott Cendrowski says, regardless whether the move was for security reasons, or to bolster domestic markets, It proves U.

S. tech isn't welcome in the Chinese market. And, that oppressive market is is partially constructed by what Caremont McKinna College professor, Minchen Pay says. Are three primary risks in China's business landscape, cronyism, arbitrariness, and corruption.
