## Transcript

>> Hello, Chicago!

>> This is Hyde Park, a neighborhood on Chicago's South Side known for its diversity and celebration of different cultures.

>> A lot of different people from different races, cultures, backgrounds, educations.

>> It's home to the University of Chicago, and Muhammad Ali, Saul Bellow, and even Hugh Hefner have all lived here. But these days, it's the President- elect that's all the buzz.

>> But that was all-- he happened to be my most profitable client right now, you know, Barack Obama. That's his chair. They wanna come in and take pictures of it, touch it, you name it. You know, they get very excited.

>> Zarif has been cutting Barack Obama's hair for 14 years at the Hyde Park Hair Salon.

>> It's a place where we come in to relax. The clients vary, you know, from lawyers, doctors, and any entities.

>> Barack Obama stumbled upon the barbershop when he first came to town as an impressionable community organizer.

>> The door was propped open when I walked in. The barbershop smells of hair cream and antiseptic mingling with the sound of men's laughter and the hum of slow fans.

>> Back then in the mid 80s, all the talk was about Hyde Park resident, Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor.

>> Everybody from all races, all backgrounds, were very excited. That's when everybody came together at once. And one time, they voted one person and regardless of his color. That's what a genuine person that he was and that was Harold Washington.

>> Those barbershop conversations resonated as Obama began to set his own agenda for change.

>> I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that in no other country on earth is my story even possible.

>> First time I really noticed the magnetism, I would say Mr. Obama was the DNC.

>> I was very proud, you know, very proud because he's a very humble guy and that really let me know who he was. He hasn't changed, not one bit, 'cause he's still the same guy. You know, when I see him, or wherever I see him, he's still the same guy.

>> From the basketball court, where Barack Obama told Craig Robinson that he wanted to marry his sister Michelle, to Valois, a restaurant on East 53rd Street, Hyde Park's main drag. This is what Barack Obama leaves behind as he heads to the White House, but his friends say he'll be back. It may just take a while.

>> It's just eight years. I mean, he has to do the first four years, but it's just eight years.
