## Transcript

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage Time Magazine Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs. [ MUSIC ] Good evening, I'm so pleased to welcome you to this beautiful room tonight for What I think may be the most important summit time has ever convened. We all know how high the stakes are. We are going to be talking about the extent to which the very health of our country, its muscles and energy and agility. In the race towards the future. It depends on the health and the strength of the institutions that you lead. We surveyed in advance of this summit, leaders in government and media, and science and technology about what they thought were the greatest concerns facing American research universities.

And the response. Was clear that these critical institutions are at risk and so our mission tonight and tomorrow is to direct the considerable fire power in this room towards finding solutions that work. This is very personal for me and it's it's not just because my brother is a professor and my daughter started her freshman year two weeks ago it's because partly I look over at time two days ago and I know that my success. Like yours like the success of every enterprise in this country depends on the quality of mind and the skills and ingenuity of the people we can hire. It also depends on having great story's to tell because that's the business I'm in and America and the world , Have relied for years on the ability of our universities to solve our nations problems, to make our society more equal, our farms more productive, our military more potent, our technology more powerful.

Our very Minds and bodies healthier. So now the question is whether you can turn all that transformation power inward. And figure out how to maintain your world class excellence while dressing the social and economic and political and technological challenges. That you're facing. How do we make sure that the range and reach of applied research, which has contributed so much to this country over the years, from the computer chip to the fetal monitor, to any number of essential inventions, can be preserved for the next century? How do we protect. Institutions fro political intrusion while also making sure that they remain responsive to the communities that they serve.

How do we insure access to education, that's truly available to all amid the rising costs and tuitions. And allocate the resources, not just for today or tomorrow or the next budget cycle. Bur for the future that we are all building. So I'm tremendously excited by the range of perspectives that we have brought together here tonight and tommorow. The value of this summit is derictly proportionate to your willingness to lean in. And to roll up your sleeves and ask hard questions and tell hard truths and put aside wishful thinking and do the hard work. Because we have the chance to do it because we are all here together.

So I wanna thank first of all everyone who made this possible starting with my predecessor at Time Rick Stengel. And Vartan Gregorian of Carnegie who dreamed up this idea some years ago and it is testimony to both of their ingenuity and enterprise and commitment to a tenacioud search for solutions that work that we all are here to have this converstaion. It would also not be possible. Without the inspiration and the support of our cosponsors, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Hewlett Foundation, and of course, our thanks to Time- Warner for hosting us tonight.

Just a few housekeeping points, the summit is on the record, in addition to reporters from Time who will be covering it. We have selected reporters. From other news outlet. We will be live streaming, we will be photographing. You are welcome to write, post, tweet, at hashtag timeedsummit it all one word. And now I am particularly excited to introduce our first speaker for tonight. My colleague, the host of CNN's [ INAUDIBLE ] GPS and our foreign affairs columnist, who is going to explore where he thinks we are in winning and losing the knowledge wars and then Later on we'll convene our first panel to take us on the first step of our journey.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Farid Zacharia. [ MUSIC ].
