## Transcript

A major change is coming to one of the hottest comic book brands in America. Captain America, that is. Marvel's editor in chief Joe Quesada made the big reveal Wednesday night on Comedy Central's Colbert Report, much to Stephen Colbert's disappointment. Don't break my heart here. Am I the next Captain America? All right, Joe. Joe, if I'm not the next Captain America, who is? Sam Wilson, his partner the Falcon. That means for the first time the mainstream Captain America in comics will be a black man. Song " When Captain America throws his mighty shield" A marvel staple since his World War 2 era debut in 1941 Captain America's mainstream brand has been revamped with a new look or actor several times but always with a white male.

When do we start? We saw the Falcon in action in the most recent Captain America movie The Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackey played him. Die hard comic fans were quick to note Marvel didn't exactly hide the change the last few months. And some writers even said the change shouldn't just be for comic books. Jesse Schedeen with IGN wrote, superhero movies do a pitiful job of reflecting the real racial diversity of America. After this week, it looks like diversity if Marvel's end game here. Noting the company wanted to attract more women and girls as an audience, on Tuesday, Marvel introduced the first female Thor, making her the eighth title with a female lead protagonist.

An editor wrote this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute. She's now the one and only Thor and she is worthy. In the past few years Marvel has changed other familiar characters by introducing a half black, half Latino spider man, an Islamic Ms. Marvel and a black Nick Fury after Samuel L. Jackson's popular cinematic portrayal. Thanks for watching, I'm Cliff Judy
